per title...

should I be using a HDMI cable from the monitor to a DVI-HDMI adaptor on the graphics card or connect it directly using a DVI cable...

sorry if it seems like a silly question but not sure which one would give me a HD picture when watching blu-ray etc..

(also how does HDMI v1.3 come into the picture if connecting using DVI?)

DVI to DVI

DVI can use HDCP and give you above HD picture.
aka 2560x1600 (if you have a 30" monitor)

HDCP 1.3 is just the lastest compliance to watch HI-Def Content which is also used in DVI

DVI is all you need

If you want it for Blu-ray viewing it would be better to use a HDMI cable IF your video card has a HDMI port on it. If your card has no native HDMI port then DVI is fine.

It doesn't make a difference, unless the monitor has more options for HDMI as some do, either way DVI - HDMI would be the same.
