SHOULD BF4 SHUT DOWN MY PC IN 2 MINS?

Ok, just tried the BF4 open beta, my CPU is at stock, I understand BF4 is CPU intensive, I use Core Temp set to 80 degrees to shut my PC down.

Right, I do have a stock cooler, but shouldn't it be capable of holding CPU temps down @ stock even under heavy loads?

It does the same thing under prime, and a while ago, on SKYRIM with one particular ENB and high settings, the same problem occurred.

I have reseated the CPU and cooler a couple of times to fix this.

Do I have a bad chip?

The stock cooler should keep it running at stock speeds.
What temperatures does it reach if you run something intensive without having it set to shut down at 80?

Are you sure all the push pins are operating correctly to mount the cooler?

I have no idea, it rises so quickly with 2-3 minutes, I see no point in letting it go any higher, as the cooler is clearly not controlling temps at all.

I've reseated the cooler several times. It's fine.

The simple answer is no, if your running the CPU on totally stock settings and your using the supplied stock cooler, the PC should run perfectly alright as long as your case isn't cramped, clogged up with dust or tucked away with hardly any airflow. What case do you have and have you considered getting an aftermarket cooler?

I would buy a better cooler,it shouldn't hit 80c with stock cooler and those volts

but the intel coolers are pants tbh

you want one with a metal backplate they are way better than intel pushpins

Corsair 650D.

Case is not cramped and isn't overly dusty at all. Case is sat under a desk. It's not 'enclosed' on either side as the desks sides are 'open'.

I have considered an after market cooler but I don't want to spend x amount of money and still have the same problem. In past builds I have ran decent OC's 24/7 on stock coolers in far more cramped and dusty cases.

I ran my E8400 @ 3.6-4.0 for 2 years in a much smaller case sat under the same desk.

Something isn't right.

Yeah, I know they're pants but even still. I'm umming and ahhing about buying this:

But @ £45 if it doesn't solve the problem, then what?

I'm gonna buy another GPU soon, but I'm damned if i'm gonna spend £270 on one when I can't use it in CPU intensive games. I really need this fixed first.

Try using offset voltage -0.030v see if that reduces temps

Sometimes the pushpins can wear and don't clamp the heatsink tight enough onto the CPU,

If an aftermarket cooler doesn't improve things ill eat my hat!

I can't see a slight drop in voltage making that much difference tbh. You may be onto something with wear though.

I probably do need a new cooler though.

Don't need to spend big on a great cooler these days. This would suit your needs just fine OP

The 2500k has a trip limit of 98c I think

Thanks, I have looked at that, I have 'tall' RAM though and want to add another 8 GIG to fill the other two slots, so i'm concerned about fouling. That's why I looked at the Corsair one.

Yeah, the CPU will trip @ 98, but that's not helping me as the temp will not stop rising when the CPU is stressed. A cooler needs to be able to stop temps rising even when the cores are @ 100%. BF4 lasted 2 minutes before it hit 80 degrees.

The reason I said about the temperature limit is because it would be useful to know if it's topping out at 81 degrees or if it continues to rise far above that.

Either way, something definitely sounds dodgy. The only other thing I can think of without trying another cooler is running the computer horizontally so the cooler and motherboard are lying flat. mavity might be able to help out if the push pins are a bit off.

No it's not topping out, it continues to rise, I turned off the shutdown option in core temp and it just carried on rising.

Nothing stops it rising, night time ambient temp, panels off, all case fans on full blast too, window open you name it.

Well it is clearly not making sufficient contact with the CPU then.

Lay the machine on its side, push down on the heat-sink and see what happens, hopefully mavity and the push will partially solve the issue...

The cooler, unless your living in a 40C+ room, will be able to keep the CPU at stock well under the throttling temperature.

a stock cooler should be bullet proof if not oc or not faulty or applied correctly.

try another refit / another cooler next.

From personal experience, I'd say you want to try and avoid taking the stock cooler off and reseating it too many times because of those stupid plastic clips. It only takes one removal where a clip gets damaged and if you're unlucky, you could be stuck with a cooler that's an absolute nightmare to get off without risking the motherboard.

I'll add my voice to those saying get a better cooler. Doesn't have to be special, just something with a nice solid metal backplate. Even if it does turn out to be a dodgy chip, you've still got a functioning cooler you can use with a replacement chip.

BF4 causing your computer to shut down is definitely not normal sir.

I would endeavour to lower your load CPU temperature to see if this resolves the issue.

As others have previously suggested, a new CPU cooler could be beneficial to your situation.

Kind Regards
