Should I ask for a raise?

I've been in my current job for about 4 years now, I work for a small stock photo library that deals with landscape images of the UK. My job description is IT Manager, I scan 5x4 transparency film and use Photoshop to remove scratches and dust from the scan. In addition to this, I answer the phone and am the only one at the business when my boss is away taking photographs.

I'm currently on about 15.7k a year, would it be unreasonable of me to ask for a raise?

I do actually manage the IT, but I do the above as well.

Do you manage people? Do you have any IT qualifications? If not, just say that you wish to progress further with IT and ask if they will pay for your exams instead of asking for a raise.

you can always ask a question.

the thing to consider is what would you do if they say no ?

if i were you i would look around at other jobs and see what you could get with your level of qualifications/experience

then atleast you will have something to compare against

If you've been there that long and never had even an inflation adjustment I'd be after a raise.

I created a database driven website in php (which I had to learn for this purpose) which is now generating sales, but is that a valid point because the website would be nothing without the photographers content?

Maybe you should use your work experience to go into bigger and better things?

4 years on that and no signs of a raise, I would be looking.

To be honest, it doesn't look like your current job has much potential for progression. I'd go around and look for other opportunities.

Ask but don't expect, it sounds like your doing some pretty basic stuff so could easily be replaced which removes the incentive to pay you more. Personally I think 4 years is more than long enough in such a junior position and you should be looking to move on to further your career.

You can always ask the question and the worst they can do is say no.

However looking on their side and from what you say you do, there isnt a great deal of responsibility in that role which would warrant a much higher wage.

Good luck if you ask though :)

Sounds to me like you know your not going to move up but the new position isn't perfect for you. If I was you, due to the nature of redundancies etc at the moment I'd stay where you are, but look around for a new position. You could either apply for that, or use it as leverage for a pay rise at your current job :)
