Reading div forums there seems to be several common problems:

1. Boot related
2. Raid related
3. Bios related
4. AHCI related
5. hardware defects

Every MB can fail, its just that there seems to be a pattern, and
from reading my national bye/sell forums I also noticed a lot of
people selling their UD5, just to bye another X58 ,...

Should i avoid UD5 ?

Or maybe just certain hardw/bios revisions ?

Is there any more proven MB from Gigabyte ? (need the TI FW-chip)

Thanks for any help

I had the one lower down from the GA-EX58-UD5, which is the GA-EX58-UD4P and it was giving me some hassel so I had to RMA it and got an Asus instead.
Seems to be with Gigabyte EX58 series have a lot of problems with RAM timings because you have to set them manually instead of on auto.

You forgot LAN related, mine drops out sometimes and others have had this problem too.

Avoid it. I'm selling mine and have an Asus P6T Deluxe coming today.

From my own experience of the UD5 its a great board which is stable and good for overclocking. I had the Asus p6t D which is also great but I prefer this board because of tri SLI. The Asus p6t d seems to be easier to understand and does seem to have less issues though.

I have had the double boot issues with this board and this is something that i have found on other Gigabyte motherboards when overclocking so I kind of suspected that it would be the same with the UD5 before i bought it. It always happens after the system has been off for a long time and it has been heavily overclocked. It has never happened to me at stock speeds. what I have found is when overclocking an overclock can seem totally stable for hours and hours running prime 95 or some other stress test program and then when the system is started from cold the next day these booting issus are present. It just meens the overclock is not completely stable. I belive that many people are unaware that gigabyte is different in this respect.

I have had four gigabyte motherboards and two of them have done this when overclocking. Sometimes the system does boot properly but the a keyboard or mouse or lan ports dont work the solution is to back off the overclock a little or increase the voltage.

I have had bios issues also where some settings were different to what was set in the bios screen, I believe this is a result of modifieng bios settings and then saving and rebooting when the system is unstable from overclocking. a cmos reset always solves this issue for me. One sighn that this is happening is when the system takes ages to get through the power on self test.

Right now all these issues are gone and its completely stable because i have spent time to fine the limit of the overclock.

There is a cmos button on the i/o shield so its covienant to reset the cmos

Nothing wrong with the UD5 at all.
The only reason you here about all the problems with them (not that many tbh) is that they sell so many of them.

Excatly and because of that, looks like certain websites are starting to up the prices up on them. So if your looking to get a GA-EX58-UD5 motherboard HHM, the time is now.

Thanks everybody :-) ,.. it comforts me that CHILLZ at least has got a solid 4 GHZ
system in the end, I need the T.I. FW-chipset due to compatibility with certain extern
audio-equipment, but MB mainly to be used for video-editing, I will oveclock moderate,
I only have the Thermalright Ulimate-90i due to space limits in my box, I know i920 DO
goes higher, but at expense of heat, therefore I just bought a seccond hand 920 CO
for cheap insteadt, I assumed a new DO would be waste for a moderate overclock
when I am limited bye the Ulimate-90i cooler, seccondly I had the i920 CO very cheap

So this is the parts right now, I will be more than happy to reach 3.7-3.8 Ghz, I will be
thanksfull for any suggestions for a good cheap 6 x 2 GB RAM solution (12GB), I have a
offer on a seccond hand UD5 comming soon, please tell if certain revisions are rotten

thanks again

Only one revision of the UD5 about that im aware of atm.
As for 12GB of ram, ask youself; Do I REALY need 12GB of ram.
Will all 6 banks full it will seriously affect the overclock.

I have no problems with mine but I did have something very similar to what CHILLZ said.

I overclocked my D0 stepping to 4 Ghz but out of the blue it seemed to hang at the bios after several weeks running at this overclock.

Although I am no expert and this was and is my greatest overclock, I must agree that with the low timings I used it does sound very much like my experience.

Great board and although I always used Asus, the fact that I send any defective board back within the UK really made me opt for this great board.

No, just get it and you can OC yours to at least 4GHz :D

Had problem with mine at the beginning with no sound from my sound card but fine with onboard sound. But seems working ok now :D

Thanks ,.. one thing less to worry about ;)

all 6 banks full it will seriously affect the overclock.

My overclock will be limited bye my Thermalright Ultima-90i already,
also why I just bought a cheap used C0-920 insteadt of a new DO,
I dont mind NOT going all the way op to a clean 1600 ram-speed, as
far as remember 1333 is the official X58-max with 12 Gb Ram, but I
seem to remembe that its easy to go higher, so i hope to just get
f.eks. 1500 ram-speed paired with 3.75 Ghz clock, is that realistic ?

As for 12GB of ram, ask youself; Do I REALY need 12GB of ram.

Premiere and Vegas already take huge advantage ,.. but also in the
audio department, despite cubase only works in 32 bit its common these
days to run it in 32 bit mode, under Vista-64, then launching som of the
plugins, also 32 bit, typically samplers with loads of sounds, this way
cubase will have the first 4 GB for its own use, and the plugs use some
or all of the other ram ,...

I intend to get some of east-west´s new instruments, based on the new
"play" engine, these run stand alone, true 64-bit, and are known to use
op to 17 GB of ram when orchestral works are being made

So actually I think 12 GB is not much ,.. but the new 4 GB modules from
kingston are extremely expensive right now, so I have to drop 24 GB,
even though some of the programs could use it perfectly well

Thanks for all answers !!!

Ofcourse I am worried about the issues many seems to have

Raid: I need raid for HD video-editing working solid

LAN: very important, render farms, hope it works teamed also ?

Overclock: will be modest, but important still for render times

AHCI: I need this working for my new eSATA docking station

However I will give the UD5 a chanse if I get one cheap in the next days

I might bye another board and get other problems insteadt :-)

I need to start somewhere

I have just bought the overclocked 4ghz package and do wonder what happens if I ever want to add memory to it?

It sounds like it gets seriously cranky on the memory controller front if 12gb rather then 6gb is used.

Hi,

I've just built a system with the UD5 and have a problem with a high pitched whine coming from the board. I know it's not any other component as I have swapped out all other parts with known working parts.

I've found after a bit of googling that disabling the C1E in the bios stopps the noise, what I would like to know is if anyone else has this high pitched noise with the board. Also if you don't have this noise do you have the C1E option enabled?
