Ok so i've got a decent pc, and reasonably chuffed with it, a 4850 which does all i can ask of, and a e2180 clocked at 2.6ghz.. am i likely to see a huge increase by clocking it to say 3ghz?... also i'm still running on crappy ide hard drives, would i see a nice improvement on general running if i got some satas?.. (like would it be worth the hassle of re-installing everything for it, or should i wait for windows 7?.. )

From my experience and overclocking, when i overclocked my cpu from stock to above 3ghz it made a noticable difference in fps specifically high end.

From 2.5 -> 3 and hd4850 card benefited as far as i seen

You will notice difference if you clock the CPU to 3GHz and above. I think IDE drives are slow nowadays, A bigger improvement If you get a SATA drive with 7200RPM and if possible the less platters the better.

You won't necessarily see an improvement from simply going from IDE to SATA, get yourself a nice 320GB single platter or 640GB (two platters) and you'll see a nice improvement.

ok.. i've got exams atm, so i could do with the pc running faultlessly.. thn after they're done, i'l clean up my hard drive (i've only got 16gb left somehow on it, /180 , despite some how i can only count 109gb used on the properties of folders..) and then plug in my other ide hard drive that is actually sitting in the case..).. and then i'l overclock the processor to about 3ghz dependign on voltage... then when windows 7 comes out i'l get that on sata and use the ide's for basic storage liek music and docs.. cus i'm hearing good reports of windows 7
