Should I bite the bullet - Build\Upgrade

Hi all,

I really need some sound advice on whether to do my build now or wait for Haswell.

Trouble is I have no PC apart from my laptop, so I can't play game or do my editing. And it may be another 4 months........

Should I wait or go for it?

I have the Gigabyte 7970 in my basket ready to buy..and then just need to decide between the X79 or Z77 which is another confusing choice /CPU and Memory.

I'd like an i7 ideally and then just 8GB or 16GB of memory?

Help me out please.

Would you wait or buy now (Which motherboard, cpu and memory?)

I have the case, PSU and SSD/HDD ready.

Z77 is old now but cheap and still has all the new features such as USB3. I think socket 2011 is the socket out for new chips but it does cost more. For gaming 8GB RAM is sufficient. An SSD is a must for a new rig. 120+GB to install games, apps and OS onto. Then a HDD for media content etc.

If mainly gaming go Z77, and an i5.. Then put money towards a big SSD :)

If video editing, X79 + 3820..

Like RJC says, what are the uses?

If you need a pc now, id go for it.

Like has been said above the 1155 doesn't have any upgrade potential, as 2011 should have some new chips soon.

2011 boards are more expensive but worth the money.

What budget do you have?

As far as I am aware, Haswell does not bring anything "special" over Ivy Bridge + Z77 motherboard. Maybe a few tweaks and small improvements but nothing ground breaking.

If you need a PC now, grab a 3770K and a Z77 board. IMO it's not worth waiting for Haswell for a small performance increase and a 3770K should keep you going for a few years.

I really don't see the point of a 2011 if you're not prepared to shell out for hexacores.

As for waiting for Haswell, don't think it's not gonna be mind-blowing. If you want sensible, go 3770K. If you want power, go 3930K, with quad channel RAM and a decent motherboard.

As for GPUs, I'd just go 7950, like a 7950 DirectCU II TOP, or a Windforce 3X. It all depends on budget.

That's what I'd do anyways. 3770K, the Asus 7950, a nice 256GB SSD, 16/32GB RAM, 550W PSU, decent CPU cooler and case, £1K or there about, job done.

If your video editing or gaming is in any way important to you, then 4 months is a hell of a long time to wait and even then, it might be longer and even then, the product may be less than overwhelming. I went through this before whilst waiting on Bulldozer before upgrading to Sandybridge.

I think you have already made your mind up.

Obvioulsly, the choice between sockets 2011 and 1155 is another no brainer. your outlay for a proper 3xxxK chip, 2011 rig would be almost twice as much as it would be for a 1155 Ivybridge 3xxxK setup, with a chip that you will be able to easily overclock by 30%+ on stock voltages. I dont know about video editing but the perfomance differences that you will notice in gaming on a 2011 rig, will be negligible and certainly not worth near double bubble in price. As for the upgrade potential of the socket 2011 boards, when the new CPUs are released, the performance increase will not justify the cost of upgrading and by the time PC tech is asking serious questions of a good 1155 or 2011 rig, there will be bigger and better things around which make 'upgrading' your 2011 rig seem very unappealing.

Yeah i think you should just go for it if you need a pc now and are using it for gaming then an i5 with 8gb of ram and maybe a samsung 840 or 830 and a caviar black is a good choice

He did say he's video editing. See below:

The main use is for video editing and games.

The trouble is I have no PC now...so not sure if to go for it or wait..

Please read the thread before posting..

The spec above is good, if your case will the k2..
