Hi my system is as follows:
i5 6600k
32GB 3200MHz memory
Zotac GTX1070 8GB AMP Edition
Z170X Designare motherboard
750w Corsair PSU
1TB Crucial SSD
4GB Seagate HDD

I game on a 144Hz monitor and also on Oculus Rift VR (NOT RIFT S).

Should I bother to upgrade? What benefit would I get?

VR -ok 90fps stable.
144Hz gaming some games are around 100fps.
So I am wandering will I get better FPS for a new CPU for example.
Someone mentioned to me that my cpu maybe holding me back in terms of modern games on VR and in general?

Your CPU will hold you back on some newer games, as they're best running on 6-8 cores, but until you actually find yourself affected, don't bother. When you do, look at a Ryzen 3700 - 8 cores. Next year's consoles will have 8 cores so games for them will be restricted by your CPU.

1080p. I have overclocked my i5 6600k to 4.2 GHz. Have got water cooling. Think I will replace the lot in 6 months. Can I ask whether a Ryzen 7 3700x or i7 9700k is better? They are at the same price point.
