Should I buy a 4870 to replace my 8800GTS 512?

I game at 1920x1200 which is really tempting me to buy this card, especially as I'll get about half back from selling my 8800 most likely, however Im worrying that with the 1GB version just over the hill, I might be worth waiting for that if its going to not be a huge amount extra, (and the fact I can get one from OCUK now for about £190 rather than waiting for competitors to get em in for a tenner saving)

I play a bit of everything, but including some MMOs like AoC which typically doesnt seem to like ATI cards quite as much, but the possibility of 30% increase in speed average, even with AA over my 8800GTS is quite tempting...

As I dont get paid a huge amount, about 200 is about the most I'd want to spend on a card these days anyway.

What do you guys reckon, worth it now while my 8800 is still worth about 100, or wait and see? (does anyone know of any benchies comparing 8800GTS 512 vs 4870 as well btw?)

Im in the exact same position myself, use an 8800gts512 at 1920x1200 although i play mainly fps. The 4870 looks like a cracking card for that res especially when you consider its price compared to nvidias latest offerings. Ill probably go for one in a few weeks when the price settes a bit.

Yeah it does, especially as the GTS512 seems to run out of steam a little on some newer games at high res (esp if AA is involved), and I dont really want to reduce my res to play games as they should be :)

Just not quite sure whether to go for it though, 190inc Delivery roughly is pretty decent as its actually something I'd get in a few days, but am just hoping someone can convince me one way or another.

I too have the 512 8800gts, I play at 1920x1080 at most, though usually 1600x1200, also I only really play Rfactor so there's really no need for an upgrade for me

but I was wondering how much improvement a 4870 would be :)

Aye, much better texture compression, I remember that from my X1900 days :)
Looked through those reviews when they were coming out and don't remember the GTS512 being mentioned in any of them :(

I'm rather fond of ATI, just trying to make the best use of my cash :)

I'm in exact same position as you guys, I'm thinking it might be worth holding out for the 4870 X2 with 1GB and snag that if its £300 or less, any more and i'll go for a 4870 1GB.

Either way i'm waiting for a 1GB card as imo gaming at 1920x1200 needs it.

You would see a nice increase @1680-1050 even with a 4850 especially using AA.
If you can sell your gts for a reasonable price like £100 or even more then I would definitely get a 4850 let alone a 4870.

i also game at 1650 x 1080 with GTS512 and although i would like a 4850/4870 i cant justify the £70 hit i'd take on selling my GTS when it runs all games at full settings even crysis playable on DX9 High 4xAA and with no real likelihood of me moving up to 24" anytime soon.
