I'm after an MP3 player to replace my Creative Zen Xtra which is getting a bit long in the tooth now. More capacity would be nice too, and the 120GB Ipod Classic is looking appealing, much to my sadness :( Lol

I assume the sound quality on them is as good as anything else you can buy? Do they play WAVs or FLAC? Do I have to use iTunes?

Pros and cons vs any alternatives and general advise greatly received :)

You won't be able to play FLAC out of the box, you will have to use itunes out of the box, I have heard that some players have better sound quality than the classic, the pros and cons are whether you want to fiddle, tweak it or just have something basic that you can just slap a load of music on and forget about, personally I'm not a fan of ipods, I use my iphone to store my music, but typically I use foobar/songbird > itunes.

However I have no idea what other equivalent mp3 players there are out there at the moment, my last one was a Rio Karma 20gb :)

Not sure whats in the cowon range. Ive been told they are some of the best players to get tho. So id look there :). Sony are rated in the sound quality stakes also i belive :)

How much storage do you want?

You could buy a Cowon D2+ 16gb and then buy a 32gb SDHC card giving you 48gb's worth of storage (plus the ability to use more SD cards with a carry case) and you'll be able to use FLAC too.

You've answered your own question, get the iPod/Zune as it seems the only player that has high capacity storage. I'd go for a Zune as big Kev said as they generally have better EQ settings.

I find iPods bland sounding unless you like no EQ settings what so ever.

However their are also Archos & Cowon PMP's but they don't have much batter life (around 8-15 hours audio)

Ipod + Rockbox sound pretty good, you get their equializer plus a whole bunch of other cool stuff ....it's just whether you're particular model is supported.

Until recently i had an 80gb ipod + rockbox + Shure E500 IEM's + RSA Tomahawk Amp combo and for on-the-go audio it sounded incredible.

Thanks for the responses guys - Forgot about Rockbox - I thought that was only compatible with the older iPods.. I will look into the Zune :)

I have a 2GB iPod nano, I've had it for 2 years and it's still going perfectly. It just doesn't look perfect :P

I would recommend the new iPod nanos. If it's just for listening to music go for it.

Also I've heard good things about the Sony Walkman ones aswell but they only go upto 16GB

if i was you id go for a creative nomad zen (or equivical), i've heard some terrible stories about those ipods and would only consider them as a last resort when no more options are available. Also don't you have to worry about DRM with Ipods? which is a bit of a con.

Couldnt be more wrong. I have an ipod myself and know many people that have one. I have heard of one fault. Very little negative comments about them. The DRM isnt bad at all, because of itunes plus and the fact you can use amazon/play music downloads. Itunes isnt a bad piece of software at all, organises music very well and can drap and drop songs into and out of it. :)
