Should I Buy RAM and SSD Now??

Hello!

I've seen a couple of articles recently suggesting that NAND and DDR chip prices are starting to creep up again due to manufacturers cutting back on production. So some are naturally speculating that RAM and SSD prices will rise in 2024. Do you reckon then that it would be wise to buy RAM and storage now ahead of a planned build in early 2024? I know you can't predict the future, but it sounds like the prices we have now are going to be the lowest we have for a while! Thoughts?

SSD storage is already up around 15-20% from last week (BF sales), so I'm sitting on my hands and hoping it will normalise a bit lower again (and kicking myself for not picking up an nvme last week, just wasn't sure what spec I wanted!)

I would not recommend buying RAM right now. I have frequently purchased RAM, for new builds and on occasion you will find it is faulty. Indeed RAM is one of the most likely items to have a fault.

You are better off getting RAM at the time of building. So you can test it for stability. With your new PC build, with Memtest 86.

Even though the RAM will have a warranty, it is easier to return things within the first 6 months of purchase due to how the law works on purchases.

If you get RAM in 2023, you may find that you have owned faulty RAM for 12 months. Unless you test it with another machine in advance.

If you can get a 2tb sn850x for £108 which was cheapest I saw it during last month you're doing well and I'd prob nab that if doing a build in next couple months..Even the slower nvme's weren't that much cheaper, so think you're risk reward is ok..if prices keep going down you wont loose much (though how much cheaper can it go)...I bought 32gb vengeance rgb 6000c30 ram for £110 back in Jan(bought the mobo over a month later as missed a deal and it sold out, and waited to see if came back which it didn't so bought a different mobo)...that's now £127 reduced so prices already up from beginning of the year, but not hugely....I don't think in the grand overall price of a build it'll make a significant impact. As @VonScar says, really depends when you're going to do your build...if you're planning in Jan, I'd maybe start looking but only if something really stands out as cheap(think biggest fluctuation I see is in the cost of the case. Both my ;last 2 builds i ended up buying the case way before the rest when i saw a big price drop)...if in Mar, not a chance and would wait

I'll be building in February so I guess I'll just play it by ear. If I see any bargains, or if prices start to jump noticeably, I'll pick them up before then. Thanks all.

depends how much you need it. If its not too important then you can wait for the pcie 6 nvme's to start rolling out in 2024 and the current ones will naturally drop in price
