Should I buy this system? Is it worth it

Hi guys, my friend has just bought himself a secondhand rig but was considering selling it straight on. Im wondering if it will lay waste to my current rig....

My specs are in my sig, his new specs are:

I7 2600k 3.4 (I'll clock it to about 4.0)
Asus sabretooth z77
2xGTX 580 in SLI
16GB corsair vengeance 1600mhz ddr3 black
H80 cooler
OCZ 850w cooler

First of all, what do you think, is it worth selling mine and having his for £400? I'd like to bang it in a new case with my current Samsung EVO.

I'm dubious about the 580s in SLI... Maybe I could flog them and get a 780.

Is the i7 + z77 + 16gb worth having?
I could always drop a 3790k in in another year if I really need the kick.

But I want to know if it will be a noticeable boost from my current system...
What do you think?
Many thanks.

what will you be using the PC for, gaming?

your sig seems to be empty and doesn't have your current PC specs in so post that so we can compare and can go from there

the PC itself doesn't seem like a bad 1 but will depend on your current PC

Sorry team!
My sig has failed me.

I'm currently on
PhenomII [email protected]
6gb ddr2
Gigabyte ma790fx-dq6
Antec tp650
Corsair h50
Radeon 5870 1gb

Sorry about that.

This is just for gaming at 1920x1080.
I want to Max far cry 4 etc and run GTA v well... Hopefully

Well the I7 rig will blow your current one out of the water, getting shot of the 580's and getting a 970 or 290 will be a good bet as well.

That's what I was hoping to hear...

Which of the 700 series would you recommend to replace the 580s in sli... If any. Cos 900 range are a bit out of my price range at the moment. I can get a second hand 770 or similar for now

580 sli will do you Ok for the time being then save for a better single card solution, for about 30-40 less you can get the amd 290 which will be roughly comparable to the 970 or just save up and get the 970 very decent solid cards they have had some issues with coil whine although i would say that its fairly small in comparison to the amount that have sold.

Awesome thanks so much guys. Brilliant stuff. Really appreciate the input

One quick question, not that I'm planning it soon but if I put the 3790k in at a later date and clock it to about 4.0 would I notice a difference between that and the 2600k?
Realistically speaking... I'm not into benchmarking I just like to see FPS

personally i'd defo buy it for 400.

i'd then try and sell the 580s and then buy the best single card you can for the price you got for the 580s. for example you can get a 770 second hand for about 150 these days.

keep the i7-2600k. not worth changing to a 3790k. those SB 2xxx K are awesome.

apart from that yeah defo get a ssd and then just leave it. its a nice rig.

I also got my rig (hopefully in my sig) recently. about half of it was second hand and it probably cost me about £550 and thats a great deal as well imho

What is a 3790k? Do you mean a 3970x? If so, then you'd need a new motherboard as it's a socket 2011 CPU, and would cost you more money for not much more, if any, improvement in your gaming experience.

Id stick with the 2600k, a 3770k isnt that big of an upgrade over it. Also the 2600k will run much cooler when overclocked. As mentioned above, bung in a card like a gtx 970 and youve got a very capable gaming system.

+1 absolutely.

After a quick look at the bay, you could get rid of the 2 580s for anywhere between 65-100 quid a piece, depending on brand and amount of vram, and your current 5870 for around 40 quid. That's most of the price of a 970 right there :)
