Should I change PSU?

I wasn't going to as I thought it was 'only' ~6 years old. It's a fairly decent on: Corsair HX620, but I think it's actually nearer 8+ years old. For the sake of £80 for a new one, should I just cough up? It would be handy to get one so I could keep both systems running whilst I copy game files across, but I don't want top spend £90 just for that convenience.

Cheers

The old saying goes - If it ain't broke don't fix it. Its a good innings for a 620. I had a 520 that lasted 3 years and a 650 that lasted 2. If you do want to replace it, the forum favourite right now is the Seasonic focus plus.

yeah that's the concern. It works, but how can you tell if a PSU is on its last legs? You can't, until it dies. I would say the PSU is at the very least 7 years old, but I can't find the order history for it so I suspect it's a decade.

I could do with getting the PSU tonight or tomorrow, and have noticed that a popular ripoff highstreet store has the Corsair RM650x for £90; about a fiver more than online, so postage basically.

For the sake of convenience, is that a worthy consideration?

As 2006 design HX620 is seriously dated.
By todays standards its efficiency is poor.
Modern PSU would likely drop idle consumption by ~15W, possibly more if you've disabled power saving features whiel overclocking CPU.
Of course also voltage regulation is lot better nowadays.

Seasonic Focus Plus is very competitively priced for modern PSU and has ludicrous voltage regulation.

Looks like 750W model is in discount...

If semi modular cabling is enough Antec Earthwatts Gold Pro is Seasonic Focus Plus based.

Thanks. I'm hoping to pick one up this weekend though if possible.

What do people think about the Corsair RM750x or 650x? It sounds like it's from about 2016, so not the latest model, but reviews seem to be good. I can get this from the highstreet, but if you really think I should wait, I'll order a seasonic and postpone the build a week.

Just installed the Corsair RM750x a few days ago and so far l am happy with it. It replaced an old Corsair TX750W model from 2006. It's quieter than the model it replaced.

Would 550w be pushing it for an overclocked 8700k system with a 980Ti?
Some non-reference 980Tis can peak around 300W and max consumption of overlocked 8700K goes easily well past 100W.
(especially if you overvolted CPU that can start fast increasing power consumption)
Add 50W for rest of PC.
While average gaming draw wouldn't be that high would prefer having little more reserve.
650W is pretty much sweet spot for high end GPU PC.
