Currently driving a Peugeot 208 1.2 110 bhp. And as lovely as it is to drive it’s not great on fuel. My current commute is 60 miles per day Mostly motorway And 50 mph A roads. And on Days off I do Bob to the Shops 5 miles each way and to my parents in Bolton so 20 miles each way.
The wife has a diesel 508 and it’s absolutely brilliant on fuel, she gets a good 70 miles more range than me from the same amount of fuel.Would a diesel be worth it?
And which one for Roughly £15,000

Modern diesels are generally great until they have engine problems, especially serious injection problems.... Then the fuel savings can vanish into some oily oiks pocket within a couple of days, unless it's still under a quibble free warranty.

If I were in your boots I'd consider a Skoda Octavia 2.0l diesel with less than 50k miles which should easily be within budget, even a vRS version. I am not totally sure but I suspect the SE might have better economy but either will be decent, probably in the 50s on long runs.

I went from a 2.0 TDI (150) to a 2.0 TDI (184) and it was quite abit thirstier, still economical but something to note.

If fuel economy is important VAG’s 1.6 Diesel in something small is extremely economical.

Unless you need a big car like the 508, why not look at the e208 or similar? Plenty available at prices you are looking at, and are easy to drive on boring commutes. Have a look at this one.

The Octavia is one on my list. Mate has the VRS and it's beautiful to drive.
150 bhp to 200bhp is more than enough. Got the Motorbike for going fast.
The wifes 508 is the 2.0 180bhp unit and that more than quick enough. She had a Insignia 150bhp and that was fine also, just not as smooth as the Pug.

Nah dont need a big Car thats why the Wife has the 508 as we use that for Long trips to Scotland and mine for the run around.
Plus parking at work suits a hatchback.
Unfortunately not considering electric, my car is parked furthest from the house and we have two chargers at work (Royal Preston) and someone always slaps a Diesel Mercedes A class in the space like a knob.

Does furthest from the house mean you park on the street? Or you have a really massive drive way? :)

Can't do anything about the knob in the A-Class, other than leave a polite note on the window or speak to the people who control the car park.

If your primary motivation is saving money then buying anything is going to work out worse than your current car all things considered.
Not just for Money saving i just feel that the Turbo Petrol doesn't have enough Torque. I'd have another Peugeot 208/308 in a heartbeat but the 1.5/1.6 diesels seem to be slightly more reliable that the Puretech Wet belt jobs.

Still on the drive but the wifes car gets priority as she's nervous about it getting scratched.
It's Parking Eye who control the car park and arent interested unless you leave at 0805 instead of 0800 and try to fine Staff!!!

I'll stop you there... :p

Seriously though, don't spend £15k on a new car to get a potential 70 miles extra range if you actually like your Peugeot 208. Especially when diesel is 10p more expensive per litre so it'll probably be costing you the exact same.

If you said "My Peugeot 208 is a tinny French car and I want something a bit more modern, a bit more comfortable and it'd be good if it had slightly better fuel consumption" - then yes, spend £15k on something. But don't spend a whole bunch of money to save some pennies.

Ok, well just to add to your knowledge for the future should you face this choice again, charging cables can easily be 10-15m+ if you need them to be and can't/don't want to change the order of the vehicles on the drive way.

I'd suggest test driving one, but that should be the first thing you do if you are considering any car. :)

To be fair it’s better Built than the equivalent Corsa Of the same age, Not as sporty as a fiesta but found them plastic fantastic and I really didn’t want a Ecoboom, Fabia, great quality but just a bit boring even in TSI 110, same goes for the VAG brothers the Polo and Ibiza.
plus I got it for the Grand total of zero from my Uncle and it’s been in the family since new. Both my Cousins have had a 208 and 308 and they’ve been nothing but reliable.
Same with Step Daughters Renault Clio.
Mum had French cars also before getting an Audi A4 which was an unreliable piece of tosh.
What MPG are you currently getting?
Currently 43.4 mpg
from £30 at 1.51 a litre I got 220 miles before fuel light came on. That was sat at 65- 87 on the motorway all week.

yes its worth getting an economical diesel over a petrol if doing 60 miles a day.

not worth it for me, i only need to do half that mileage.

Amazingly, doing almost 90mph in a small petrol engine’d car is not the most economical way to drive.

Yeah I have a 180bhp 1.6 turbo Volvo S60 its a heavy car as well.

Was getting like 30 mpg, start of last year when the petrol shot up I changed my driving style completely now getting 40mpg+ on average thats rural/town mix, and have seen 50mpg+ on longer trips.

It's borring as hell mind you, but probably good for many reasons not to drive like Michael Schumacher.

I switched to electric a few months ago and it’s a curious change - with no gearing, it’s a simple matter of the faster you go, the less efficient it is due to the increase in drag. I still stick to 70 on motorways, but it’s surprising how much more range you get if you only go at 50.

I have things to do and places to be though…

Modern diesels with all the filters slowly choking it can be unreliable once they get some mileage on them, there is a lot to go wrong. Older ones without it don't qualify for ULEZ crap. If you aren't going in to London or Birmingham it's not so much if an issue.
