Should I ditch my CRT for a widescreen LCD?

Hi all

I'm looking for something to get for Christmas at the moment, and one thing I was thinking of was a new monitor. I've currently got a 19 Inch IIyama Vision Master Pro 454 CRT which I'm really happy with. These new 22 inch LCDs have caught my eye though. Does anyone know how their colours, response times, brightness, etc would compare to my current CRT? I'd only be buying it for the increased size, I don't care about space saving/power consumption/weight and all that kind of stuff.

So basically would it be worth upgrading? I know I'd be losing flexibility in terms of resolutions and such but I do like the idea of having a full 22 inch screen.

Thanks in advance

Risky to change if you're very happy with your current screen. I've just done a similar change from 19" CRT (Viewsonic P97F+SB) to 20" widescreen TFT (Dell 2007WFP) and while I wouldn't say I regret it (since I couldn't stand to have that great lump on my desk anymore, and I want to look after my eyes), I do miss the quality of the CRT and find the TFT lacking in some important areas - stuff like black depth (in a dark room), noisy movie playback, and tearing (due to low refresh rate).

I've hardly played any games since getting it, which is a bit worrying. On the other hand though, it's proved a superb screen for my 360, although I don't know whether it's going to be good enough for HD movies when I get the 360 HD-DVD drive.

i've just changed from an iilyama 19' crt to the nec 20' widescreen tft. i can't say there's a huge loss in picture quality... a little bit of motion blur on close objects in games but hardly worth mentioning... the big thing was the square foot af extra desk i now have to fill with crap!

...Just moved from a Sony fw900 24" Widescreen CRT to Two Samsung 205bw 20" TFTs.

Apart from saving deskspace (by the truck load ;)) and the fact that 50kg was pretty hefty to move when required :o picture quality has improved and I have no regrets at all :)

The worrying thing is that I could have 7 of these Samsungs for the original price of the Sony! :o

due to lack of space i went from a 19CRT to a 19WS tft and to be honest ithink i still prefer the CRT as i had to use it the other day and there is a big difference in quality IMO

I had a Dell 2405FPW LCD & 24" Sony FW900 CRT side by side for awhile , I ended up getting rid of the Dell and currently use the CRT. Reasons for getting rid of the Dell: Poor black levels (especially at night), strict viewing angle , slight input delay , fixed resolution, a "grainy" look on the LCD especially noticable when comparing Photo's on the CRT, low refresh rate forces you to enable Vsync to prevent screen tearing.

LCD was a nice place to visit (bright / vibrant) ...but I wouldnt want to live there :)

bit 24" crt is nice if you ahve the room. since 17" crt was big enough tft is worth it for worse performance for me

having lost one of my 17 inch crts to due to the girlfriend needing it i got a 19" ws for a second monitor and also thought at the time of getting 2 and scraping my 19" mitsu dimond pro CRT but i dont think i can bring myself to, the res on my tft isnt likable enough compared to 1600x1200 on my crt

Thanks for the replies everyone. It doesn't seem to be worth the swap yet, I suppose it'll be a while before TFTs really catch up to CRTs. The NEC 20WGX2 seems really good, but I'm not sure if it would be worth getting since the size increase over a 19 inch isn't that big. I was hoping the 22 inchers would be good enough, but it seems they're not quite ready yet. Oh well

I think that if you change your monitor from CRT to TFT and get rid of your CRT there will be "No Going Back". I made a recent search of the internet for new large screen CRT and didn't come up with any results.

There's a couple of quality 21" CRT doing the rounds at the moment - Samsung 1100MB and Viewsonic P227fB for starters. I'd love one of those but due to the weight and hassle from my partner I've been forced to go for the 22" Belinea LCD instead, which works out around £50 cheaper.

I know (size apart) it is going to be inferior to my existing CRT due to all the inherent problems with TFTs, but I'm not quite so serious about gaming now as I used to be so I'll just have to put up with it.

Its different for everyone I think. I had the 19" 454 & tried a few 17" tft's, hated them. Then got a dell 2405 & loved it! Sold the 454 on ebay the next day. Would never buy another crt now.

get a second hand Sony GDM FW900 m8 no tft/lcd comes close to it period.

quote "24" widescreen professional CAD monitor and they piddle over any other screen I've used. Even useable at their max res of 2304 x 1440. Fantastic".

I think weight is a bit of a problem though. Wouldnt fancy moving one on my own unless I fancy my spine going pop.

Like you I have been hesitant about making the jump to a LCD as I am concerned about their non native resolutions when it comes to gaming. Unlike you I don't have a very good CRT - 4 years ago it was the cheapest 19" Iiyama CRT. This monitor is going to end up by blinding me.

I am looking for the best display for gaming irrespective of size and weight without paying a fortune. So would you guys recommend buying off EBay as I have seen a good condition 3 year old Iiyama Vision Master Pro 514 HM204DT 22 which is supposed to be very good? How much should I pay for this CRT - the "buy it now" price is £100.

If you can find a mitsubishi 2070 22" or an iiyama 512 22" go for it. No tft monitor will come close for quality. I'm hoping my 2070 will last another few years until tft's have matured a bit more.

Its also worthy of note, that pro gamers all seem to use CRT where possible. I wonder why. :p
