Should I ditch my CRT for a widescreen LCD?

If you can find a mitsubishi 2070 22" or an iiyama 512 22" go for it. No tft monitor will come close for quality. I'm hoping my 2070 will last another few years until tft's have matured a bit more.

Its also worthy of note, that pro gamers all seem to use CRT where possible. I wonder why. :p
Is the 512 better than the 514 or will I be able to pick one up for less?

For those wondering 2 of the main reasons are LCD are limited to displaying 60fps or sometimes 75fps and they all have a low response time compared to CRT. If you ever put a LCD next to a CRT with the same image and move in game you notice the LCD lags behind.

What is the image quality like compared to a LCD. Most PC games have very dark environments - which handles the contrast better. I am not too worried about lag as I have a 360 connected to a HDTV and it has not been an issue.

Not everyone can notice but I find LCD to be laggy and not as smooth as CRT. As long as your comparing a good quality CRT to LCD you will find the CRT has better colours, faster response and an over all better image along with more flexible resolutions. The problem is most people compare their cheap 5-year-old CRT to their new LCD and they say the LCD is better.

Thanks, well that's decided I will be upgrading to old tech while I am still young enough to lift it. I have no idea why I have kept my cheap and nasty CRT for all these years considering the rest of my gear has aways been fairly good - a waste of good graphics cards.

I had an illyam 19" crt. was lovely quality went up to 1600 beutifully

but it was a heavy beast, and my desk was starting to bow in the middle

SO i decided to get a tft. due to cash restrainst, i went for the cheapy £130 19" Hannes one

regret it big time

Text looked blurred and could never get the brightness contrast right.

At one point i put the crt and the tft on my desk to campare the settings.

First thing i noticed is that I did need a new monitor, my crt was starting to look old and tired, the tft was very sharp(not sure thats the right word) in comparrison untill you started to read text.

After much swearing I was goign to take it back, then on advice from a friend, I set the brightnes and contrast to 100% (my eyes my eyes) then adjusted the setting on my graphics card (leadtech 6800)

That made quite a difference.

I still wasnt happy with the text, depsite settign up that truetype thingy

then coincidently the very next day, I got windows update tell me it had a new Internet exporer update, so i installed what turned out to be IE7

I have to say that made a massive difference to the monitor.

I can only imagine that the truetype fonts thingy is set up better during the IE7 installation (it does mention it at one point)

In hindsight If I coudl make the decision again, I woudl not have gone for the monitor that I did, but for the price and now it's set up correctly, it seems to be ok

it was only normal text (you knowthe black on the white background) in things like msn and some web pages that it had a real problem with.

Games are fine, dont seem to get any blurring or anything on fast games (nfs:carbon for example) and my reactions seem faster if anything on shooting games (Sof2) but that maybe that by going from 19" crt to a 19" tft I have effectively "upgraded" to a bigger monitor

Any way that is just my opinion / 2 pence worth

P.S I cant bring myself to throw away the illyama lol

I'm currently the proud owner of a 454 Pro. I can't quite decide whether i want a decent 20" like the NEC or a half decent 22". I'm finding myself using my computer less and less these days so i'm half inclined just to get a 22". To be honest i don't think i'd notice half of the issues associated with a TN panel unless i was really looking for them. So indecisive though, been trying to make my mind up for months

Im in same boat, currently got a mitsubishi diamond pro 930sb and i really like the monitor. Would love a 22" tft but aint liking the idea of poor black depth and tearing or having to use vsync

Thanks for the replies everyone. It doesn't seem to be worth the swap yet, I suppose it'll be a while before TFTs really catch up to CRTs. The NEC 20WGX2 seems really good, but I'm not sure if it would be worth getting since the size increase over a 19 inch isn't that big. I was hoping the 22 inchers would be good enough, but it seems they're not quite ready yet. Oh well

Well, I moved over to the NEC from a 19" CRT and am extremely happy :)

It all depends on a few things tho...namely, the NEC is a top notch TFT in every respect whereas some other model TFTs I've seen were not good enough that I would move over from CRT. Plus, if I was giving advice to a hardcore FPS gamer, I would defo tell them to stick with CRT....CRT is still very much the daddy in that domain :) But since I'm not into hardcore FPS games it isn't an issue for me

i have the same monitor spud 930sb and in the same boat(pretty big boat)

i do find the crta bit too dark on default settings and never calibrated one properly before as im a noob.

just got a 8800 gtx tho and i think i need a quality 24" to do it justice how do they fair against a good crt? also just how good is that nec 20.1 model as well? i like my movies and need crt quality playback or as close to as possible and nice vivid images that aint washed out.

help :)

Try and view the models in person. If you ask satisfied TFT owners for their opinions, you are more likely to hear phrases like "you will only notice it if you really look for it.." than you are to get an unbiased report. :p

I have been checking out prices on EBay for the top of the line 21" & 22" CRT's and I have come to the conclusion that they are just not worth the price that they are going for. £60 to £100 For a monitor that is 2 to 3 years old and may only last you another year - from my experience they do not last that long before they start playing up. I am embarrassed too say that I sometimes spend more time behind a monitor than I should and I do not want to go blind.

A new 20" LCD would be nice but I have taken a vow to cut down on my PC spending so I may just have to settle for a 19" LCD. What would you guys recommend purley for gaming, wide screen or normal?

This may seem like a stupid question as I have never gamed with a LCD, but I presume AA would work/look pretty much the same as with a CRT - the lower resolution of the 19" LCD will be fine as long as I can pump the AA.

Damn it... I had finally convinced myself to keep my monitor, and then the Dell 2407WFP goes on this week only at a price I'd just about be willing pay  If I do have the money, I'm guessing this monitor would definitely be worth upgrading to? 24 inches of screen space would be amazing, and it seems to get really good reviews in terms of image quality. Plus from what I understand it can display resolutions other than 1920x1200 since it has 1:1 pixel mapping.

I'm seriously tempted...
