Should I downgrade my CPU?

I am having problems with mixed CPU temprature readings which are stopping me from achieving a reasonable overclock with my QX6700 and Striker Extreme. I have raised the issue on several forums but no-one seems able to help me.

I have come to the conclusion that it would be better to sell my QX6700 B3 and buy a Q6600 GO. With the £100 profit I could invest in a Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme CPU cooler and Thermalright 8800 GPU cooler.

I would probably be able to acheive a higher clock speed with this.

Do others agree with this or am I raving mad?!

mixed cpu readings? if you mean accross the four cores you could allways lap the cpu and hsf,i was getting big differances and the lapping sorted it out.other than that sell it and go for the q6600 option its a great overclocker, ive managed 3.42ghz on air:)

Don’t you think 100 pounds profit is a little optimistic though buddy? I know of a lad that only wanted £200 for his qx and still struggled to sell it.

Other than that it’s a sound plan! :)

If it is the temps differing between cores, swapping to a Q6600 isn't going to solve anything. As people have the same issue with these cpu. Only way to solve it is to lap the cpu and hsf.

Sorry I did not provide much info this time round...

The problem is that CoreTemp is showing my tempratures HIGH even at stock when the cpu is under stress (SP2004 etc). Everything else reports differently (speedfan etc) but I am re-assured that CoreTemp IS correct....

Even after calibrating my results are:

Idle 1.6GHz/Vcore 1.25v - Ambient 26c, Tcase 27c & Core0 36c

Idle 2.6GHz (stock) Vcore Auto - Speedfan = Tcase 31c, Core0 41c
Idle 2.6GHz (stock) Vcore Auto - CoreTemp = Core0 48c

(CPU100%) 2.6GHz (stock) Vcore Auto - Speedfan = Tcase 63c, Core0 65c
(CPU100%) 2.6GHz (stock) Vcore Auto - CoreTemp = Core0 77c

With regards to price I have had a look on eBay and QX6700 are selling 2nd hand for £230 and QX6600 are selling for £130 so as long as I bide my tiem I should get £100 profit.

What you gusy think?

That actually seems quite normal for a B3 coretemp reading under load with a stock cooler.
Why not buy a better cooler now, you can check to see if the contact the old cooler made was any good and then give the QX a whirl with the new cooler, see if you can get anymore out off it. If that fails grab a G0 (keep your eyes open for low VID ones as some of the higher VID ones need rather a lot of vcore just for stock running)

ahh, ok well in that case there a little high. but dont give up on the QX yet, by doing so you loose nothing :)

Yeah I have re-seated the CPU and the BigTyp several times.

I am using the thermal gresse provided with the Big Typ. I appreciate I could get some Shin Etsu x23 or something similar and that would give me a few extra degrees but I surely shouldnt be getting these temps with my setup (Antec 900 case etc).

I am applying the grease in a penny sized circle in the centre of the CPU. Not too much etc

Hmmm never done that before but I guess there is a 1st time for everything :-)

Im just convinced I have got a duff CPU as other people can get more from there Q6600 with the same setup than I can with my QX6700. If you guys think it woudl be better to stick with the QX6700 then I would take advice (Im new to all this OC lark).

Would I not be better to get a low VID Go Stepping Q6600 and lap that!?!?

Also do either of you guys understand why CoreTemp has different core temp readings than SpeedFan (even after I have re-calibrated)?

Lap your cooler, you can’t lose anything by doing that, then see how well the paste disperses between the cpu and cooler. you can easily see when it’s not seated well.

If you also lap your cpu and find temps are still pretty poor you will be left with a cpu that will simply not sell as well as one with an untouched ihs. It’s a bit of a risk imo.

They simply read from different sensors

also apply tp exactly like this when you are running a quad no in a circle...

OK so your advice is dont give up on my cpu.

Love it, lap it and buy it some Shin Etsu x23 for valentines.

I assume you are basing that advice on the fact that the QX6700 SHOULD be a much better CPU than the Q6600 so its worth a triwl??

Never said that, anyway ive used se microsi mpu-3.7 and x23 and both perform nearly identical to as5 and very slightly worse than mx2. i used some oem paste once to test my c2d and later compared and found it was worse but really not as much as I thought it would be.

I myself feel there is no point lapping the cpu, put it against some glass, does it look real concaved if so maybe that is your issue. but if it isn’t don’t lap for lap sake :)
