I've got a p5q pro motherboard, and use the onboard sound. I've got some money to throw at something, so i was thinking would it be worth it to spend £40 max on a soundcard or am i not likely to hear a difference... or is there software i can use to give a similar effect?..
Should i get a new sound card?.

A discrete Soundcard will always give better sound quality over onboard sound codecs as it'll use dedicated hardware for the process instead of software emulation that the codec will use. You should be able to get a great card for £40. Just make sure you have decent enough headphones or speakers to make the most of it.
