I have been sitting at work today and we got talking about apple kit. Personally I haven't really been a big fan of Apple after my second gen ipod didn't last 5 minutes and my nano broke just as fast but the techie inside of me which is saying "get the damn thing fool".

Now before I wonder off to the apple store and grab one (if I can). I think that I need some reassurance and convincing from some Ipad owners/fans out there. Currently I have a netbook, laptop, desktop and smartphone (pre) and was thinking, "what would use the Ipad for" and to be honest I can't answer the question. My current devices do everything that I need but I still think that I want one.

So overclockers talk me into or out of buying an Ipad.

Thats exactly the position i was in after the ipad was released...was thinking of getting one but decided after a few days of playing around with it id be bored of it...seriously if you cant think of a reason what you would use it for then your better off saving your money.

Yes then you can sell the netbook and laptop.

The wife hasn't used her netbook and I haven't needed the laptop in the couple of months' I've had the iPad.

Before anyone rants about that being stupid because the iPad doesn't replace these things - they did for me because I really didn't use the laptop for anything other than word processing (covered admirably by iWork Apps), Email, and surfing. I do accept the lack of flash restricts the overall usability of the iPad but not enought to hold back on a purchase. Obviously if you a more demanding mobile tech user then the iPad doesn't replace the other bits of kit.

The iPad is quick, intuitive and easy to use - I love it. Again beofre I get accused of blind fanboyism - I have a PC gaming rig running Win 7 alongside my other Apple gear and see the merits in both.

Just do it - you know you want one :-))

I think you just have to use it yourself for a week or so really.. I personally believe no one can answer your question.

Thats the problem I think I do, but I use my laptop for my work and it literally gets used every day. We have a windows network and to be honest the ipad just isn't going to cut it in the office. It could possibly replace the netbook but the mrs uses that.

The only place I can think that I would use it is around the house when I would normally use my laptop.

edit : and possibly on the train into work

t the techie inside of me which is saying "get the damn thing fool".

Actually it's probably more the 'user' inside that wants it.

I've had an iPad 16GB 3G since launch day. The iMac gets used less - the work laptop is now only used for work.

It has some great functions out of the box, others through applications.

Kindle is the killer app for me - it has reignited book reading. Watching videos when away or on the train works for me as well.

I don't think anyone can really be prescriptive about why you should buy one - as the use is personal. Is it worth it can only be answered on a subjective basis - i.e. is it worth it to you?

As with the other posters using is believing (or maybe not if it does not fit for you).

If the Apple return policy applies to the iPad I would give it a try and send it back if you don't like it.

I'm not sure anyone can really answer this for you, the iPad seems to be a particularly personal bit of hardware. Some love, otheres loath it.

As a consumption device I think it's great. It's fantastic for kicking back on the sofa and watching movies and I love reading comic on it. If you do a lot of travelling it really comes in to it's own.

In terms of price, ignore people than go on about it being over priced. The cost is entirely relative to your financial situation. If money is a bit tight you'd be mad to buy one. But if you happen to have £699 lying around that you can afford to blow on a luxuary item then go for it.

The money is not a problem and I have an unlocked mifi for the 3g aspect of it so would only need to spend £429 for a 16gb wifi version using the mifi for 3g on my travels.

the urge only came today and its going to be a bit of a off the cuff purchase, Seen as you guys haven't really made me want to go either way I might wait a few days and see if the urge is still there.

Write down a list of tasks/websites etc. you use your netbook and laptop for, then book a personal shop in an apple store, sit down for an hour with one and decide if it could potentially replace them.

If yes, buy one, if no don't buy one :)

I do a lot of development in sharepoint so can tell you categorically that this will fail miserably.

I think i would use it as a web browsing (forums etc), a few games and just to generally look at. After all there is no denying that it is a very pretty device.

Do what I'm doing - wait for them to upgrade the hardware to be on par with the iPhone4. If I still want one by then and the price is right, I'll get one.

How long does the device last when using it on MiFI? Someone mentioned 4 Hours on a full charge.

How long do you get?

You went from using a laptop for word processing to an iPad.

You can't be processing that many words.

With a bluetooth keyboard (or even using the on screen keyboard) it's not that much of a stretch to write a couple of hundred words at a time.

If you're a writer, yes, it'll fail.. but why shoot down his usage? :p

Agreed

I use the BT keyboard and the Pages App - easier than most netbooks for typing (due to full size keyboard).

Also I use the iPad in meetings and find typing notes easy once you're used to typing on the on screen keyboard (ie no BT keyboard) and way better than the tap tap tap tap tap tap tap tap tap of soemone typing on a regualr keyboard next to you in a meeting - it's almost silent and not distracting to others.

Play with it and see if you like it - iBooks is great for storing and orgainsing many pdf files that I need to refer to for my work all the time all this +apps that allow wireless printing and it really is a mobile word processing workstation. I also use it for presentations (using keynote) at work. In short I can see more and more uses for it and tend to seek out oppurtunities to integrate it into my activities at work and at home.

Some (like me) will find these uses and see it as a fantastic purchase others may not.
