If so, how much do Apple charge or better off buying it doing it myself?

Looks like it's about £100 for a replacement battery from Apple:

I would only change the battery if I was finding the current capacity to be too low. However, if it is always connected to the mains then there's no real need.

My personal experience of buying cheap batteries to replace in laptops is that you get what you pay for. In my old HP laptop a new branded battery costs about £80. I found one online for £35 but it only lasted a year. My original HP battery had lasted 3 years. After that experience I would stick with the official battery as you have peace of mind.

Agreed it looks fine, how long is it lasting you?

You might notice it lasting a bit longer now you've an SSD in (unless you went ahead with the optibay?).

Usually when the battery gets to about 300 cycles it starts to deteriorate quickly. Hold on to it for a moment and don't buy a genuine one from Apple until full charge lasts about half an hour (mine was at 600 cycles at this point). I got one for about half the price on the Rainforest shop which has been perfect.

It lasts somewhere between 2 and a half to 3 hours, with the screen off though. That was Friday when I played movie through it to my TV. I guess it would be around 2 hours if I use it normally?

The people in Apple Cardiff quoted me £89 for a new battery (they wouldn't charge labour as it was a simple job) however it was done under warranty :p

Unless it is annoying you then just live with it. The guy told me if it goes below 80% health then they change it under apple care (if you have it). Mine was at 79.1 and done for free! and as much as I was still happy with the 3.5 hours I was getting... going back up to 6/7 hours is sexual :p haha!

Why would you change it at 87%? ⌥ + Click on the battery icon and it will tell you the condition. If it's "Normal" which it will be then leave it...

Hmm my MBP (mid 2009) started to warn me to 'Service Battery' a couple of months ago.

Going by the screenie above, it doesn't look that terrible, but the battery is only lasting 2 hours or so these days, with light usage. I wonder if the 'Service Battery' is a timed message? Or because the capacity has dipped below 80%?

My battery is completely knackered. As soon as the power cable is removed it just switches off. £100 is a bit rough for a new one but never use the MBP much so it isn't an issue running on mains.

That's not many cycles for a 2.5 year old Macbook. You either don't use it a lot or have it plugged into power constantly?

It's only down to 82%, it's not really a problem just normal wear. It's a low number of cycles for that amount of drop though, although age is a factor.

My 2006 MPB would completely wear out a battery within 150-200 cycles, I went through three - one battery a year on average. At the end they'd hav a couyple of hundred mAh in them and last 10 minutes if you were lucky.

The new one is somewhat better :

I don't think I have Apple care on this, is the battery warranty still 3 years (36 months) ?

Therefore if it drops under 80% in the next 4 months they would in theory replace it FOC?
