I'm in the pre-order que for it but wondering if I should wait. I want to play on ultra with no dips, so it be nice to have a new gfx for BF4.
My Specs are:
2500k @ 4.4
8gb ram
7950 His Iceq

My current gfx card is quiet, will the 290x be quiet-ish or should I wait for better cooling and see what the best deal is down the road?

I'd wait until they'd been released first...

See what the reviews say, get feedback from real users. Early adopters are your canaries down the mine, use them to help you make an informed decision.

The 290x has the standard leaf blower cooler on it , it ain't gonna be quiet. Smart money would indeed to crossfire what you have with another 7950.

How is anyone suppose to be able to say how the 290x, a card not yet released or proper benchmarked, is going to perform in a game thats funny enough not released either. Buggles my mind.

The cooler will make a nice looking paperweight for me after i WC the 290x. If i had a 7950 already, i would probably get another one.

Currently my card is a 580 pny liquid cooled (which are overpriced second hand), I dont want to go SLI when my GPU memory is that low. Also i would need to get a new PSU to power another 580.

Presumably the bog standard 290 will be on a par with the 780 and cost £300-350, whether that would be enough to get Nvidia to drop prices I don't know.

780ti not out until 15th nov so best way to spoil Amd cards is to lower 780 until 780ti come out

One, if not the main reason why I'll not touch another AMD card again is because of the noise they produce. It's a bit of a bugger at 1am and your playing Battlefield 3 with headphones on and your g/f comes out of the bedroom and asks you to turn the PC off as it's waking her up. Yeah it was the fan on my then 6970. VERY loud. I did exchange it for another but that was exactly the same. Went to a GTX580 and I could hardly hear it. Not looked back really. I like my rig to be seen and not heard :)

It may be loud, but if you consider the likely price for the 290x/290, an aftermarket cooling solution like a AIO loop mod or similar, wont cost all that much and will give serious benefits when it comes to overclocking the card. Something worth considering if you don't want the hassle of a custom loop but want to lower noise and heat!

Honestly I can't be bothered with the hassle. I just want to put a card in and not faff around with it just so I don't hear it not more. My days of overclocking, modding and generally messing around with my rig are behind me. I just want game with my mate and have a laugh. Like I said, each to their own but it is about time AMD took a leaf out of nVidia's book and sorted out that noise. Match what I have now on my GTX680 and I'd be happy.
