Should I get the iPhone or wait for new WM phones?

Hi guys,

The 16Gb iPhone3G has peaked my interest as it seems to do all what I want it to do from a WM phone. The only problem is that I dont know if I should wait for the new HTC Rapheal or Sony Xperia X1.

Ive been itching to move from WM phones as Ive had one for a few years (on the current Vario III) and would like to try something different...

Im currently on Flext 35 with WnW from T-Mobile (so paying around £40) and unfortunately the contract ends in March 2009. Im presently negoigating with T-Mobile on this since I wasnt aware I was re-contracted to an 18month contract so my have some leeway in this. But thats another matter...

Looking at my usage I primarily use the phone for data access (both on the phone and via a laptop) and use around £75 of my £180 allowance (say 75% on voice; 25% text/picture messages). I occasionally use the camera, but not that often...

Looking at the iPhone plans, the £35 seems ideal as it offers the same data access with free Wifi hotspots and enough minutes/texts (does that include picture messages - a picture message = 2 text messages?).

I was considering going for iPhone PAYG with the Simplicity plan but it just doesnt seem worthwhile (I lose visual voicemail and other things - right?)...

What do you guys think?

P.S Worked out that the iPhone £35 plan is identical in value to the Flext 35 just not the same flexibility. Also 1 pic msg = 4 text msgs ..

The iPhone doesn't support picture messaging (MMS).

As for the rest, I guess my only suggestion would be to wait until they're all released and have a play with them yourself. Everything I've seen about the X1 recently has been very off-putting though (bad keyboard, bad camera, etc.).

I thought the new firmware was adding in MMS - though perhaps I read rumours...

The X1 release just seems to be slipping and Im really unsure if my next phone should be a WM phone - just like to try something different (only alternative is the iPhone in that respect)...

Also as Im not too up with the iPhone3G I still have to jailbreak it to use 3rd party apps? Will I have any trouble with O2/Apple if I wanted to do this?

I think you'd still have to jail break, I think the MMS is a rumour too. I like the X1 but don't know if i can wait that long. I may go N96

iPhone 3G wont support MMS. I don't expect it ever will either.

After the 11th July you can download 3rd party apps from iTunes and the App Store, some free, some of charge.

The iPhone 3G will only work on the iPhone tariffs, and on PAYG it will only work with the iPhone PAYG SIM. You will not be able to use a simplicity package or other. (Unless someone works out how to unlock it, although that wouldn't work either as you have to sign up to the iPhone contract there and then in the shop.)

How can you send calender items? Thats the main use for me atm - pics over email isnt a deal breaker...

Scrap that PAYG thing then - I got confused - wonder what the PAYG pricing is (both tariff and phone)...

Might wait until August and give it a month to bed down...

Still wondering about the above regards the iPhone...

Also thought to ask about if it uses haptics at all?

Still mulling over the phones - got a few days to decide - does the O2 iPhone package come with the normal cooling off period? Ill probably be getting it in store though...

Finally I just saw the Samsung Omnia - anohter one to put on my list to look at :p

The iPhone will cost £299 for the 8GB and £359 for the 16GB on PAYG.

Tariffs will be the usual o2 PAYG ones I expect, with the free minutes/texts things you can sign up to.

You can send calender items, but will have to be signed up to Exchange or MobileMe to do that over the air.

PAYG just doesnt seem value for money - definitely gonna go for the £35 tariff though Im having to read a lot on stuff on the iPhone to make sure it supports it than I would for other phones and thats really putting me off...

What it does it does well, but stuff Id assume and want to work just wont and theres little chance they will unless I pay for the app.

Apple really make it hard for a prosumer to buy their products :(

I for one will be jumping onto the iPhone 3G bandwagon on friday coming from a HTC TyTn2, requested PAC from Vodafone on friday. After almost a year with the TyTn2 I think it is a great phone technically but it's OS WinMo 6 is just way too bloated, its feels sluggish and looks dated but the functionality is definately there. The main reason I didnt get the original iPhone was because of lack of 3G, GPS and the nazi hold on 3rd party apps which is now solved with the new iphone.

Frankly I dont think theres a phone out there that can run WinMo 6 smoothly and will be waiting for WinMo 7 before considering going back to a PPC.

I have done exactly the same thing as you, just sold my Tytn II and now waiting to pick up a new iphone 3G and i also have a PAC code from T-mobile

Functionality wise the WM phones have the edge.

Usability wise, the iPhone has the edge IMO.

I've yet to find a WM based device where the touchscreen is as good as the iPhone's. And as a touchscreen device, as its only method of input, it's very important. No WM devices I've yet tried are as responsive or accurate as the iPhone's touchscreen.
