I think the timing might be tight to take advantage of the excellent ocuk offer on the 480 or wait for kepler..
Im lucky as I have a choice between 2 x 470's and 1 x 480 that I already own in other rigs
I have a dell 24" @ 1900 x 1200
I want to watercool, so whatever I choose has to last me a couple of years to be worth the investment
I can go 2 x 470 now if I can find the blocks, but Im concerned about the VRAM, not such an issue now, but could be in 2 yrs time, so Im hesitant to buy the blocks for them
I could get another 480 and go SLI - would that last me 2 yrs?

What sort of set up will I need to last me? Im thinking I will need SLI for futureproofing, as a single 480 will just about do for now, but will be pushing it in a years time..

I suppose one option would be to just go SLI with the 470's on air for 6 months and see what comes out later on

PSU and case will be fine, so nothing needed there

will 470 blocks work with a 480?

470 block wont work on 480 as i remember

at the moment i have 480 ek fc 480 and second on air

they play everything maxed out i just have crysis 2 da bf3 nd dirt 3

crysis on ultra vsync on never below 60 fps

bf3 same

soo its very good investment just your energy bill will rise :D

funny thing - had a 5770; christmas I upgraded to a 6850; now I just got a 6950 - but I really want a kepler or AMD fast card ... but there were deals I couldnt pass up on the 6850 and 6950 ... errrr

so ya ... I might hang with my 6950 and wait till things settle a bit with the whole amd nvda price stuff and then buy who knows ... maybe you should try that too?

DICE made a statement to say that NFS The Runs would be the last FBII game for a while. I don't foresee any other problems with any other engine TBH. The new Bethesda game looks like it uses Tech5 and I think Fallout 4? will also.

It was kind of like when Crysis came out. People went wild and spent all that money on fancy GPU set ups and it proved to be a bit of a waste of time.

As I've said before, PC gaming is only as good as its last game. The last big title that released. And right now that is BF3, which is what you should base any purchase or upgrade on. 1.5gb IMO is just about enough for that. You may run into some issues on certain maps, but certainly not enough issues to put you off.

If you intend to stick @ 1200p then I would say that a pair of 480s should last you at least a couple of years. You need to remember that they're quite probably faster than a 7970, and at the price that cost I can't see any one rushing out to buy anything else for at least two years (well, unless they're Nvidiots or AMDsoles).

The only issue with pair of 480s is the vram? Fine for now, but going forward would I not be better off with 2Gb cards?
If it was air, it wouldn't matter so much, but blocks are pricey so this really will need to last.

Thx for the replies

Yes you would be better off with 2gb cards. Sadly until Kepler the Nvidia options for that are few and very expensive.

560ti 2gb are around £200 each and nowhere near as quick as a 480.

580 3gb? more than a 7970.

So that leaves you 6970, again inferior to the 480 and 7850/70 - Trust me. If you have used SLI kiss your kids and say your thanks. Crossfire SUCKS.
