Should I go 24" or 27"?

I'm trying to figure out whether to go 24" or get a 27". Either way I will want 1920*1080 resolution.

Is a 27" too big to work on, it will be about 0.5m away from my face when I sit at the desk to work on it. Is text legible? What I mean by this - is it fuzzy because the pixels are "bigger"?

I'm not really worried about the quality too much because I don't really notice the difference, I've been on my 13" dell laptop screen for a while and that's fine to use.

I currently watch films at around 0.5m on my 13" screen but I want to watch them in bed from around a 3.5m to 4m distance....should I go 27" to get a decent sized picture?

I can't really picture the size, what are we looking at widthwise for a 27" monitor. I would get a cheap one, probably the prolite.

thanks.

Well I don't have bad eyesight and ill be watching video at least once a day but I take it that you are saying the extra 3" isn't worth it?

I think that it may be a disproportionate increase in price compared to the extra area of screen that you get.

However, if a manufacturer has both 24" and 27" models they are not always identical functionality, manufacturers sometimes provide additional functionality on the larger screens. I suppose it's a case of checking specs and getting a calculator out if you wished to delve really deep into it.

If you are comparing 24" models with 27" models then I think that personally, the first thing I would check would be the size of the dot pitch.

If the 24" model has a dot pitch of .25mm and the 27" model has a dot pitch of .30mm then personally I would go for the 24" model for the sharper image.

This if all you want is the best quality image.

I'd suggest trying to test a couple of different screen sizes, colleagues and friends will probably have those sizes, then see for yourself. to some the extra 3" makes all the difference in terms of legibility.

The difference in features mentioned elsewhere is also something to consider

What's the rough size of a 27" and 24" screen (width and height).

I am going to put some bluetak markers so I can gauge the size.

Thanks.

Depends if you are looking at 16:9 or 16:10, you can work it out with a bit of "Pythagoras".

For a 16:9 aspect, the width is 23.53" and the height is 13.24" for a 27" diagonal.
For a 16:10 aspect, the width is 22.90" and the height is 14.31" for a 27" diagonal.

Hmm, I think I will go with a 24" screen just to be safe. I've had one before so I know the quality (regarding resolution/pixels per inch) will be good.

So on that note, can you recommend me a 24" monitor:
- Budget monitor, so the cheapies
- HDMI preferable
- Half-decent speakers inbuilt preferable
- 1920*1080
- 16:9 aspect ratio preferable.

What do you recommend?

I can appreciate the comments, but for me, for gaming it was a toss up between a cheap 32" tv for monitor use or a 27" monitor. Glad I went for the monitor, but a 27" monitor does take some getting used to! I would find 1080p on a 24 Inch screen a little bit too small but that's just personal preference.

Have a look at the Samsung range, they have some decent options with HDMI connectivity in 16:9 aspect and are reasonable build quality.

I would previously have always said bigger is better, but having worked with a 24" and now a 27", I would say that if your sight/taste is such that you are about 18" or closer to the screen, you are going to be moving your head a lot with 27". It doesnt sound like a big deal, but it really won't fly when youre trying to get stuff done.

24" if you like to sit close. 27" if you like to sit back, or if youre watching a lot of video :)
