Should i go for a 120hz monitor or 2560x1440 monitor for gaming and programming?

Depends what use you want out of your system really.

I run with a 2560 * 1440 and I love it, but some FPS fans swear to 120hz for games.

Also the higher resolution require more Vram, i have 1.2gig and want more :D

Hi there,

May I ask how important you value your gaming on the monitor vs the programming and for your gaming what type of games do you mainly play?

If you mainly play fast-paced games and value gaming highest then a nice 120Hz monitor would be the best bet (what model depends on what make and model graphics card you have)

If value programming highest then I would go with the 2560x1440 monitor - as you will get a lot more size and resolution for your money.

As for how the 2560x1440 handles gaming: These IPS panel monitors may not be quite as quick as TN film 120Hz monitor, but they still do rather well with gaming and the extra image quality they offer makes the games look even better (not to mention the higher resolution and high pixel density). Therefore it is a bit of a toss-up (and somewhat depends on how sensitive to LCD ghosting you are) between the two, but personally I would favour the 2560x1440.

For a 60-128GB SSD I would strongly recommend a Crucial M4. They are a bit more expensive than the sandforce 2000 series drives (like OCZ Agility 3 and Corsair Force 3) but they seem to be more reliable and faster.

You may also want to consider the 80GB Intel 320. This drive isn't as fast as the ones I mentioned above, but it is a decent price of just under £100 and is very reliable (it comes with a 5 year warranty from intel).

Gaming will be important as will programming. As programming is going to be my future career wise and currently is important at university then I think its best to say thats the most important though. So i'd say 60/40 in favour of programming.

I mainly play games like FIFA 12, COD, Skyrim and so forth.

Okay, thanks for the heads up.

Thanks for this. Looks like I'll go for that then. I was tempted by the Hazro to be perfectly honest. Going to wait and pick one up after Christmas sometime.

Okay cool. Thanks for all the information, really appreciated.

I think i'll go with the Hazro then and then the Crucial M4. :)

If you haven't already seen it, here is a very in-depth review of the Hazro. The thread on OCUK is also very enlightening, though it is massive.

The big "issue" with the HZ27WC (ie the cheapest hazro 27in with the lowest input lag) is that it doesn't seem to support HDCP - so you will have issues playing Blu-rays on the monitor (though you could get around this using anydvd).

I don't watch Bluray's anyway so that won't bother me one bit. I dont mind watching films at 720p even. Its nice to have an awesome film but most things these days are better than the old days I remember as a child moving the bloody ariel around to get a signal for MOTD. :p

By the way, thanks to the link to the review. Reading it now, really interesting :)
