Should I Go OEM?

I am about to put together a new gaming rig (literally monday) and am having second thoughts about my Graphics card.

I bought the Nvidia 460GTX 768MB arond christmas to play Cliffs of Dover no i think i should maybe have something mroe powerful but really don't fancy paying through the nose for a card like the 580 or 570.

So i have a few questions.

First, are my worries misplaced, will the 460GTX do ok? I am of course go to test it first so will see for myself, but try and put me at ease if possible ;P

Second, if i do feel the need for more performance, should i go OEM?

Third, if i go OEM i am aware you get no cables or anything of that sort, which cards require a seperate power cable and which cable would that be?

Finally, which replacement would you recommend?

Thanks

Sam

Your psu should come with some cables for the gfx card. I would double check otherwise converter cables are cheap on the bay.

Go for whatever that is cheaper.

If I was in your situation then I probably would go with the GTX 580 OEM - they are around £50-60 cheaper than the cheapest new 580 cards and you still have one year of warranty backing them up should something go wrong in that time.

That said, make sure that your new PSU can handle the GTX 580 as it is a much more power hungry card than a GTX 460 768MB. As for the cables, as nate says - the only cables you should need are the power cables and they will come with your PSU.

The GTX 580 is also a relatively long card - so make sure your case can fit it.

However, I would certainly try out the GTX 460 before you drop near £300 on a new graphics card - so long as you are running at a res of 1080p or less then the GTX 460 768MB is a pretty great card and handles most modern games well.

Thanks Andi, i have a 750Watt PSU, this uses 244, should be ok.

I will do the testing as required and then see what happens from there.

How can i find out how long a 580 is? I am using an Antec 100 case, looks pretty big to me!

The GTX 580 is 10.5 inches long and I'm certain it will fit fine in an antec 100 (that case can take cards up to 11.6in long).

As for the PSU, may I ask what make and model number it is?

Just reading the GTX460 box i have here it says i can OC it, and it has already been somewhat Overclocked, is that something i could look into? overclocking to 1gig?

You should be able to OC it, how far you can take it really depends on the individual card. Worth a go I guess, but be careful.

As for overclocking it to 1gig, obviously an overclock won't add video memory but if you get lucky and have a nice card then it is conceivable that you could overclock it so it performs at the level of a GTX 460 1GB. However, this is far from guaranteed - the card is technically only rated to run at the speed it says on the box.

Ok understood! Thanks for the help, i am so new to all of this i start to panic when i think i might not be able to run the game as nicely as i would like then i start to panic even more at the concept of the money i have to spend to get it as nice as i would like!

Will be a shame if i have to get rid of a brand new 460 cus it's not up to snuff, don't know what i would do with the thing!
