Well ive just started doing my computing degree and we're using windows, osx and linux.

Ive got a high spec pc and a mac mini with a 1.66ghz core duo. Im about to dual boot one of them and not sure which one to do it on. Anyone have prefference between the two?

And apart from programming why do people use linux? Thanks for your help

people use linux for a range of things, i doubt the primary reason is programming.

I use it cause its free, very customisable, stable, fantastic catalogue of open source software etc. etc.

Also a knowledge of the BASH command line system will get you very far in the IT world, so many people nowadays just think using a computer is all about the GUI :(

Depends what machine you value the most, if your high spec PC has a windows install thats taken you months to tweak full of nice software and your mac is just a toy, then shove it on the mac.

My primary reason for installing linux was to develop. I prefer it for a development environment for many reasons.

I now use it full time simply because I cba dealing with microshaft and their 1000's of assumptions that all users are deaf, dumb, blind, limbless and clueless.

I'd be inclined to put it on your Windows computer as a second boot. My reasons beng that disk recovery software etc for Windows is more readily available than for OSX and more people know how to do it, so when it inevitably goes bangers-up you are more likely to be able to fix it at little to no cost. Also things like grub boot loader can be a little difficult to get your head round at first and are easily wiped with a Windows XP disk if necessary.

Basically there are LOADS of people like me everywhere who can fix Windows when it goes wrong but Mac/Linux can be a lot harder to get help for.

thanks for the answers guys. Quick noob question as ive only had the mac 3 days. Can you network osx and windows for file sharing with a simple cat5 ethernet - ethernet connection

EDIT: quick google brings up a detailed guide. cheers
