I've never used Linux and would like to try it out would installing it on something like 4Gb pen device be good so I can get a feel of it. I know I can boot from USB.

If you actually want to run off a pen drive (not install from) than I think performance is going to be pretty bad for but the most lightweight distros like DSL, puppy etc.
If you want to get a feel most popular distros have liveCD's for this very purpose and some support multisession burning so you can prolong your trial without going for a full install.
