Should I install Service pack 2??

In all honesty I wouldn't install it.

It turns your PC into a nanny state and cripples its performance. You can continue to download and install all of the security updates from Microsoft and if you have good Anti-Virus, Anti-Spyware and Firewall programs then you're perfectly protected

SP2 has some benefits for naive computer uses but if you're proficient with computers then I'd stay with SP1a

Excellent thanks very much mate. :)

Actually.. What does this do? I cant get my head around it? will it have any negative effects on bittorent etc?

If you install SP2 it reduces the amount of TCP connections you can have to 10 which will severly reduce bittorent performance as it limits the amount of seeds/peers you can connect to.

The Security Centre can be disabled but theres other issues I have too - I have got dialogue boxes informing me that Windows has removed access to this file. It also limits what attachments I can open/save

It crippled performance on my laptop and on a few of the work PCs. It also made it a nightmare to upgrade the work PCs to XP Pro - had to uninstall it first

To 10? No it doesn't. It just prevents you opening more than 10 _new_ connections per second. The definition of "new" is connections that are in a half-open state (i.e. where the remote host hasn't responded, yet)

Do not install that patch unless you have problems. The vast majority of P2P software have fixed their broken ways of the past. They no longer endlessly flood outgoing connections to duff IP addresses. They actually queue up outgoing connections and initiate one every second or so. At least, that is how Azureus works.

Bad advice.

A lot of people make the wrong assumption that SP2 was "just" security updates. It is not. It is of course a large part of SP2, but it is also a Service Pack just like any other. It has general bug fixes, kernel improvements, Explorer stability enhancements.

Becuase when it came out it had a few incompatibilities with other progs etc.
Yes that lasted for about a month, and it was years ago. I saw in your other thread that you have recently formatted... so you have nothing to worry about in terms of installing SP2 and compatibility.

I highely disagree. SP2 is a welcoming change. It made my Pentium 3 more responsive when in Windows regardless of it having only 128mb RAM. It did have software issues but relevant patches have been dashed out now. As for security, well, without SP2 I dont think you can get any patches beyond SP2 if you haven't got it installed. Also weather or not you are proficient with computers SP2 is recommended because future softwares rely on it to work.

I don't see why you wouldn't want to install SP2 :)

For the record computers are quicker without the service packs, I've used mine with and without and the boot time is much longer with SP2 and performance is slightly down. I also have a couple of PC's that have issues with SP2 and cause them regular grief so they stay on SP1. Bare XP with no service pack at all is quick as you like, but there are plenty of glitches that the service packs have ironed out.

If you want my opinion then as a general rule it's better with SP2, the security is better and it is definitely more stable. However, install it before all the drivers and AV software and it will be fine, retro fit it after everything else and you may run into problems.

Not true. Service Packs contain kernel improvements. I know XP SP2 had quite a large amount of tweaks done to the kernel in the areas of locking and synchronisation. Also SP2 was compiled with the latest VC compiler (at the time), whereas XP SP1 and RTM were still using the same compiler and compilation settings from 2001. Now considering Microsoft's VC compiler has come on leaps and bounds in the past 5 years, that is definately a performance boost I want on my system.

Well cheers all, I installed it in the end and so far so good. I havent noticed anything bad yet, and I have turned off the security centre, dosent seem to have slowed my pc down at all.
