Should I install the DirectX 9.0c update in Vista x64?

Hi all,

I have recently upgraded to vista x64 and overall I am extremely impressed with the OS. However I just tried to install 3Dmark 2006 and was prompted to install the Directx9.0c update. I chose not to and the installation continued. When I try to run 3Dmark i get a "d3dx9_28.dll not found" message.

My question is, should I install the 9.0c update? I was under the impression that this shouldn't be done in Vista as it is DX10 native with a directx9 wrapper of sorts. I would just try it myself but I know from experience how hard it can be to pull an unwanted version of DirectX out of an install. :p

Any ideas guys?

DirectX 9.0c working ok in my vista ultimate

Thanks mate, I guess i'll go ahead and install it then. It seems a bit strange to me though that we need to install what is essentially an older version of DirectX. I'm sure I am just misunderstanding something. :(

Doesn't vista have Directx9L??

My point exactly... Can anyone clear this up for us?

But anyway I installed the DirectX9.0c update and 3DMark 2006 ran perfectly. I got a score of 10914.

Anyone know if that sounds about right? My machine is as follows:

Core 2 Duo @ 3.33
2GB DDR2
8800GTX (Not overclocked)
Asus P5W DH-Deluxe

Etc... etc...

Sounds the same as mine, mine scored 11k just. My system is almost identical to yours. I have the same mobo, 2gb ram and same video card also Vista 64.

Ahh lovely... So all is as it should be then. I take it you had to instal the DirectX9.0c update also then?

I thought Vista had DX10?

Aye indeed it does mate. It all seems a bit odd to me. Perhaps NathanE or someone else with some extensive Vista knowledge could shed some light on this?

Ahhh, so we are saying Dx10 and Dx9 are completely seperate entities? Seems to make sense.

In the past obviously you would just have for instance DirectX 8.0 installed and that would play all Dx 5, 6, 7 and 8 games. I guess things have changed this time around then. :)
