Should I install Vista or not?

I am expecting to get my OEM copy of ultimate tomorrow.

I do not know whether to install it or not. The main reason for not being sure is I believe I have a faulty motherboard and will have to replace it for another one in the next week, and I am aware that if I install Vista I MAY invalidate my license.

Then there are the other issues, such as compatability with all the software, hardware and games I use. I realise I may have to reinstall XP Pro if I have lots of problems with that with Vista until full support is offered for everything.

Any advice? I really want to install Vista as its a new "toy" but I don't want any issues for doing it!

If you suspect you have a hardware problem, then just wait. Not worth risking a license on a PC that may die on you, and you'd prolly only run into further problems as a result of it. Just be patient ;)

Just don't register it, when you first install it, try it out for a while then if you want you can either put XP back on or register Vista.

If you do have to replace the MB just contact MS and ask them to reset the registration key for you.

Surely if you are replacing it with the exact same motherboard, Microsoft have to reissue you with a working key (if your one no longer does).

Well two things, first of all - I would prefer to replace it with a slightly higher spec motherboard as the one I have (Asus P5B) does apparently have some problems with over heating from what I have read in other places.

And second, wont vista try to auto register itself? it may do it before I have even noticed if thats the case!

Just buy a new Motherboard. Then, Divide the Hard drive into 2 partitions. One for Vista and One for XP.

If your existing Mobo is on its way out then why install now? Get a new one first.

Because I am impatient! It is like a new toy!

And I may have to wait at least a week to get it replaced.

I may give MS a call and see what they say, of course I could install it and not activate it, that remains a possibility!

I called Microsoft and to say the stupid indian woman was not helpful is an uunderstatement.

I said I had an OEM version of Vista that I wanted to install it but my motherboard may be faulty and that I wanted to know it would ok if I activated it then changed my motherboard.

She told me it was not out yet and it was a "mislicenced" and that I could not install it and they would not help me, and then she asked for my name and number and information about where I got it from.

She said it was only available with a new PC and I said I bought it with my motherboard and that the license says thats ok, and I am a lawyer and know better than her - which she denied - which always ****** me off to another level when some woman who has done no legal training thinks she knows better than me!

Naturally when she asked for my information I hung up as all I would have done is made sure they would not let me activate it ever.

This leads me to think it is best to not install it until I have sorted out my mobo problem but its very concerning that they would be that unhelpful.

A word of warning - and to say Im feeling really irritated is an understatement now.

- and I can't actually fit my own mobo I would have no idea where everything fits or believe me I would get one ordered and fit it myself-

^ not very helpful, I agree. It's enough to make you want to buy the retail version to avoid such aggravation... or just not bother at all.

Best to get a new Motherboard first, then install Vista. Where do you live? If you lived near me i would fit the Mobo for you mate.

I live near brighton and you probably like a long way from me!

I installed Vista Ultimate on my laptop to see what it is like (without entering the key and activating it of course as I am saving it for my main PC)!

I think I will probably hold off on installing it on my main PC until a Vista compatible version of Peer Guardian is available as I do lots of downloading and simply don't feel safe without it!

Having said that I like how vista works and its features - I downloaded dreamscene and I have a moving desktop background which looks very good as well!

Does this mean that if we dont activate we cant get any of the fixes for any potential problems?

Exactly. Plus MS normally grace new releases of software like IE, MP, DirectX etc. with the requirement that the software has passed WGA, which means it must be activated.
