Should I keep 2407 or chance replacement

My Dell 2407 has 1 dead pixel in the top left quadrant of the screen (black dot showing up on light coloured backgrounds). It's only a day old, and after an initial shock of it not working (due to dogy dvi cable), the only thing wrong is this dead pixel. No backlight bleed to speak of, and no noticeable banding. Just 1 dead black pixel.

I have a call open with Dell who said they willl drop a replacement to house and pick up current one on Thursday. Won't be there so cannot inspect, and a bit worried as they said it will be a refurb not new. Other concerns would be getting the old firmware with the banding issue, backlight bleed and cosmetic marks.

Need some advice here. Should I live with the issue or chance a replacement. Bear in mind I can continue to swap out for replacements if I am not happy (within reason I suppose). As it is a next business day service it is a swap and there is no verification of your fault at your house. Dell just swap and go :)

Anyone ?

It really depends on you - if you can live with the 1 dead pixel and nothing else is wrong why chance it? On the other hand you've paid a lot of money and should expect a defect free product. I would probably swap it out and keep swapping until I was happy. When I pay out that kind of cash I expect nothing but the best.

The big question is what is a refurb ? Could it be a panel someone sent back with stuck pixels, a panel with a scratch on the bezel, dodgy stand etc..

It could also be one that someone sent back simply because they changed their mind. It is a risk but if you don't like the refurb send it back! :D

Have you tried massaging the dead pixel?

Depends how annoying it is to you. If it isn't very than no point IMO. Otherwise take the risk and take the refurb or get a new one from the retailer.

a refurb should i theory be in very good condition,

basically it a product that has been sent back to dell, and re-processed at their factory. So it should have the latest firmware, and really be damage free.

In reality that can differ though :D lol

As said, swap it out, and keep doing so until you receive a product that your happy with.

I never replaced a monitor with Dell, but is it not possible for you to quickly try the Refurb monitor when it arrives and give it a quick check over? If its got more dead pixels or scratches, surely you can just reject it then later call dell and tell them you are unhappy and demand a NEW monitor? If you offer the delivery man a coffee and biscuit while he waits the 5 minutes it would take im sure he will be ok with that?

Thanks for all the advice. Doing sicky tommorrow to stay home from work, and when refurb comes will tell guy I need to check it. As you said deadsquirrel, if there are any scratches or dead pixels I will tell yer man it is worse then the old one and off with him. Then ring Dell and ask for another monitor. I basically want one with zero dead pixels. Don't care about manufacturers guidelines with regards to pixels. I will ring them up everytime and lie if I have to, to get a perfect screen. Off now to ring tech support to make sure they are coming out tommorrow as promised.

Some **** called in sick today which means I get my holiday for thursday/friday cancelled    <mutters some swear words>

sorry to hear that :)
however I have been working hard and am feel knackered. even said it to boss this evening. going to text him later.

Me too, and I've only had 4 days off holiday this year! However I shall pay them back by not working overtime on sunday like I said I would, and I will not work christmas either! - They find it hard to get people to work overtime, not suprised with the attitude they have towards there loyal staff.

I have no holidays left, not even for Xmas :(
So have no choice tommorrow unless I want to chance them leaving the refurb and hoping it is ok.

:O Well I get xmas off anyway but we are expected to work xmas and its double time, but I dont care about the money as I would rather the time off. I still have 25 days holiday left :/ I have had sick days off in the past when I have expected stuff to be delivered.
