I've RMA'd a video card and the replacement has arrived but it's not the same card...

I sent back a

Asus ATI Radeon HD 4850 1024MB DDR3

And got back a

XFX ATI Radeon HD 4870 512mb GDDR5

Having not a clue about the difference i just want to check if the higher model justifies the memory loss?

No, Id demand a 1gig card, whilst the higher model is faster, the loss of memory means that at higher resolutions it will struggle, just tell them you appreciate the upgrade to the 4870, but you need the 1gig as you use high resolutions

By higher res what are we talking about? I'm still in 1280x1024 land :)

For my res would the faster memory and GPU be better or worse than the original?

Ask nicely for the 1gb 4870 - yeah, remember to mention that you need it for high resolutions that'll work nicely. If it doesn't go your way then you still have a card that'll max virtually every game out there at the resolutions that you use.

Tell them you Specifically bought a 1Gig card for High rez work/play then go on to Demand a 1 Gig replacement.
Be Uber polite to whoever you deal with though as it's not there fault etc.

Tbh, I'd stick with your replacement, as its faster at that res. Lucky person!!

At 1280x1024 u arent in danger of maxxing out the VRAM so i'd stick with the 4870 512MB as its a faster card. However, if u plan to upgrade to 1680x1050 or higher in the near future then i'd ask for a 1GB model.

Install it and give it a spin! :)

A 512MB HD4870 @ 1280x1024 is severely capable! :D

The only downside to keeping that card would be if in the future you upgraded to a higher res monitor and played the latest games with high IQ it may stutter a bit . . . . but if you got no plans for a monitor upgrade your all sorted!
