Fellow forumites,

I need your help deciding whether i should move out or not.

Heres the deal; I am currently studying at Caledonian University :D and am loving it. However as you have probably guessed im still living at home. Which means lots of travel (2hours a day) and gettin up really early (I need to be up at 6am to get to a class at 11am).

Now im nearly at the end of the first year and am deeply considering moving out to student accomodation for the whole of my second year(possibly longer). The obvious advantages to moving out are:

-Close to uni, like 5 minutes walk or less.
-I can go out with mates whenever (currently i just crash at a mates flat now and again)
-No more rushing for bus or getting up early
-The whole experience of looking after myself and independance (which tbh i need)
-Glasgow is entirely at my finger tips, in terms of location the flat couldnt be better

and now for the disadvantages:

-Due to a lot of probable loan spending ill be in a lot of debt in the future.
-Getting money together right now will be a pain, i have around 2500 of my own money but for the flat i need 3600 for 43 weeks. But i would need to pay that all at once in september. (I need to to raise 1.1k by september)

Anyway the main question im asking is

Is it worth the money and debt and hassle moving out to student accomodation?

People with their own personal experiences please feel obliged to answer :)

Do it and 1.1k is nothing if you get a full time job over the summer and dont wee all your wages away

seriously, anyone who is at uni and lives at home - i feel sorry for them, really.

move out.

Yes, and if you can't earn that money, borrow, beg or steal it lol. Moving out was the best thing that I ever did when I moved to London. Wasn't for uni or anything, just to get away from living at home.

Now back at home 16 months later, but that's another matter and only a short term thing lol :D.

I went to Keele Uni and as such I stayed at home, although the fact that it's only ½ an hour on the bus helped greatly in my choice. That said though, I did save an absolute packet. :)

If you can afford to then I'd definitely move out, I moved away from home when I went to university and it was entirely the right decision for me, might not be for you but you'll never know unless you try.

I have a few mates who stayed at home through uni and while they enjoyed themselves I think they did miss out on a fair bit by not moving out, they didn't have the random nights out as often, they didn't have the ease of not having to travel in and out every day, they didn't have their own place to relax between lectures etc.

I'm not sure I'd have wanted to stay in halls for my second year since I was there for my first but since it would be in effect your first year it ought to be an experience if nothing else.

I'm a first year at uni now, and I've learnt more from independence than from the course, whether that's a good thing or not, it's helped me no-end.

Sure I may be in a bit more debt in the years to come, but it was a worthwhile investment for my well being.

When u say 2 hours travel do you mean each way? I got that impression.

Anyway, when I went to uni I lived at the parental home and drove in, I just stayed round uni mates for 5 days a week lol. In the final year there was a spare room so i stayed in the house rent free!

I would say move out, sounds like you missing the beers with the lads and the pussy.
