depends on screen rez....1080p its about 15% ave faster the 980. 4k 290X is equal and or faster.....specially crossfire.

Real question is; what will you be playing at? Do you plan on sli or crossfire *crossfire seems to be much smoother than sli these days*

and for that price you could do 2 290s and call it a day :D

Screen wise ive got an Asus PB278Q, screen res 2560 x 1440.

I'm similar to Fiocca really, out of the box power and a card that will always have very good power when i need it and will make games enjoyable with good frame rates, a card that won't date too quickly. I presume an an 8GB card is good to have over a 4GB card, what advantages does that give, forgive me as i'm not an expert when it comes to gaming and cards.

I'm thinking of buying this

I'm also considering a GTX 980, how much real time difference would you notice between the Sapphire Vapor X R9 290X 8GB and a GTX 980 ? Value wise what would you say is the best to go for ?

I'm not a heavy gamer but i like to game occasionally, its nice to have good graphics and the power when you need it.

I've got this one > http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-269-MS, tis a beast. Runs cool and quiet at £319.99 plus 4 games is a steal

3 Year Warranty.

VRM temp '2' never changes, and temp '1' is low even when maxed, def recommend the MSI 8GB.

Boomstick, that looks a good card and a good price but with having a black and green motherboard it wouldn't really go too well with it.

Upto now i'll be buying a Sapphire R9 290X 8GB Vapor X tomorrow.

I'm looking for a good reason not to get the Sapphire Vapor X R9 290X 8GB lol, the GTX 980 would go better with my board which is a G1 Sniper 5, how many of you would avoid getting a card just because it doesn't match your board, is that a bit too OTT ?

I'm ready to pull the trigger on something today, i like the style of the GTX 980 reference cards the ones that are silver with a single fan underneath and says GEFORCE GTX on the side. Their are so many different makes tho, which is the best to stick with if you went down that route ? How close is the reference 980 to the ones with the aftermarket coolers in performance, can they both clock ?

So Sapphire Vapor X R9 290X 8GB for £349 v GTX 980 which is around £150 more.

980 not worth 150 more.......specially if you look at newer games; most have the 290X= or within 5% of 980......except stuff from Ubisoft; and then nothing really playing nice with that :D

980 needs to come down in price; its just over priced;

290X 8 gig is the better card specially at 4K....

I'm not a heavy gamer but i like to game occasionally, its nice to have good graphics and the power when you need it.

Throwing your money away, £200 Powercolor 290 PCS+ and 4 games or Ino3D 970 and free game for £240.

Buy an SSD(if you already have one use it as a Game installation SSD) with the change.

8Gb isn't going to make any difference in game unless maybe@4K or you go 2/3 way CrossFire.

I ordered the Sapphire R9 290X Vapor X 8GB, it should be more than enough for my occasional gaming and should hopefully make the games more enjoyable. I'll probably do a bit more gaming now that i have a better card. Thanks for the replies and advice.
