Should I re-apply AS5?

When I was fitting my CPU, I didn't really know the correct way to apply thermal paste. I mean the method is sound, but I wasn't sure if it was perfect for C2D.

I placed a small blob in the center of the heat spreader, and smacked my Zalman on there. @ 1.4v on full load both cores get to like 65c. Having read this I'm thinking maybe I should re apply the paste as stated, I'm getting a new case soon so while I'm in there I could get it done. Is it worth it? It just means I've got to get hold of a cleaning product.

no harm in giving it a go. if your doing a line that long make it as thick as uncooked rice

usaly i do a line half that length the samw witdth as boiled rice

The line method is best for conroe as it ensures that the core under the IHS has AS5 across its length. I can't see it making a massive difference unless you have a concave IHS but as paul says its worth a try.

I spread mine completely over the cpu with an old debit card I found lying around. I then reseated the hsf in a different direction.

Did the job perfectly and lowered my temps but over 20 degrees at load :)

used to be 70 degrees load, now 50 and that's at 3.4gig.

Just get some Jetart 4800. Bout the same performance as AS5 but its instant conductivity, not more waiting for 200 hours :D.

But yea I agree with the spreading idea. Much better than just placing a blob and pressing it down .

I used the line method with my e6600 but found that it wasted quite a lot of paste. It's hard to determine the correct amount.

For my Quad I just spread it out with a credit card.

Spreading it out with a credit card is fine if you have a flat IHS. If you don't then you're basically far better with the line between the cores method.

I spread it out first time around and was getting idle temps of 45-50°C, and 55-60°C under load with a tuniq. I re-applied the as5 in the line method and reseated the cooler, now my idle temps are around 34-37°C and 45-50°C under load.

I'm more than happy now, guess the ihs on my 6600 is quite concave.

thats why i do the line as you end up with the end effect anyway... and if its concave your fine aswell. also easier to do

Another vote for this method. Try it last night after reading this. Knocked about 10C off my concave c2d. It was really my last option before lapping.
