Recently built an Intel SLI rig with an Antec NeoHE 550w psu and Asus PSN32-Sli deluxe mobo. First thing I did was turn on the asus smartfan option in the bios. Bad mistake. Apparently my bios is reading my cpu temp as 11 degrees !! Which meant the Arctic Freezer fan either never came on or was running very slow. The heatsink heated up very fast. I tried to shutdown in windows but as the pc was obliging, I heard this sort of electrical discharge noise (not a popping like you get when capacitors blow). There was then a burning smell for a few seconds from the back of the psu. However since I turned off smarfan the system is running perfect in sli, with stable voltages and at 4.5ghz on air too. Is there a chance I blew something on my psu and over time this could damage my components. Or should I just forget it.

A BZZZT and a smell of burning coming from my PSU would prompt a hasty removal from my system lol.

Better safe than sorry.

There is the possibility something got into the PSU, caused a brief short and got zapped. Hence the bzzz and the burning smell.

You are right tho, odd how its perfectly okay now...

Loose(ish) mains lead could cause arcing and an ozone type smell but not burning could have possibly been this and i guess could explain why it ok now? Make sure its plugged in properly and if its all working now and power rails are ok then i guess its ok, spooky

Hey, I just realised the extension I had the pc plugged into for building is connected to a dodgy socket. Anytime I put a surge protector on it, the earth lead would flash like mad !!

Last night I overclocked prime stable to 4.5ghz and running 700/1800 in sli now with zer artifacts. Must be ok. My concern though is if something blew in the psu, could it come back to haunt me later !!!

The more I think of it, it was an ozone smell.
