I wanted a game I could play with my young son - I let him choose and we've been attempting to play SE for the past few weeks.

I'm not a massive fan of Early Access - but appreciate the reasoning behind them and accept the concept if developers keep on top of their product.

However, as much as I enjoy the game the multitude of game halting bugs, which seem to be added with updates rather than fixing them, is testing my ability not to swear over voice coms when multi-playing with my son.

I've just noticed Empyrion - and it looks broadly similar and my son seems interested too. It's got the dreaded Early Access warning but the Steam reviews seem fairly upbeat about the developers input.

Has anyone played both? - Is Empyrion a comparable game and more importantly will it stop me from wanting to snap my keyboard in half when I find that I can no longer lay a crucial game block in a world that we've spent hours developing...

Any hands on experience appreciated.

Thanks for all the responses guys, appreciated.

Oddly, Empyrion was in a Steam special - so, sod it, I bought a couple of copies. I've only had a cursory look - and from first impressions it seems a lot like ARK (maybe wrong). That's not a bad thing - so I know my son will enjoy it, which is the main thing.

I do wish the SE developers would bring in some experienced coders and fix their bugs as the game has the potential to be epic rather than the apoplectic inducing hodgepodge that it is. I feel like a mouse constantly pressing the 'red button' for food and getting an electric shock - I keep going back for more pain...

Ill look into Statoneers and Atroneers too, thanks for the suggestions.

Space Engineers requires A LOT of patience. We've played 48 hour sittings and barely had anything really :D I love that game so much though.

Yes, agreed, - and can empathise with your game experience. :)

I've been fortunate to come across a really helpful guy called Rox/Roxette whose guided me through the murkier depths of getting a server stable. If you ever come across him - don't be afraid to ask for advice - he's a very knowledgeable chap and clearly knows his code and the game inside out (i think he's a past tester and 'unofficial' developer - 4000+ hours).

It's the very recent bugs that's proving to be the 'camel's back tolerance point'. I can't place any: thrusters, medical room or a flight seats after about 10 hours of play on a dedicated server - all since the flurry of recent updates. It's a game killing bug and as you probably know not their first. Their fixes have a habit of paying Peter at the expense of Paul - if the game wasn't so god-damn addictive i would have spared my frontal lobe the pain weeks ago :)
