Hello,

My system is as follows:
Cpu: e6420 @ 3.1ghz
Mobo: p5b Deluxe ( 1 ram slot not working hence the 3Gb ram)
Ram: 3 Gb pc2 - 6400
Vga: Gtx 260 - 216 cores
Psu: 580w Hiper
Hd: 1 Tb across 3 hd

I use it primarily for gaming purposes and like to have details set on high.
I play between two resolutions: 1680*1050 and 1920*1080.

I am looking to improve my system's gaming performance as on some titles it's starting to struggle.

I was wondering if I was to replace my Gtx 260 with a 58x0/Gtx 4x0 and a new psu. Would my cpu capable to run without bottlenecking the system?

Or

Is it time for me to upgrade to an i5 750 system? If so is it worth it?

That would be my last resort. If I were to upgrade I would go down the i5 750 route, but for now I’m trying to find out if I were to replace the gtx 260 with a 58x0 would my cpu bottleneck it.

If it doesn’t I’m more than happy to stick with my current cpu for a bit longer.

i odnt think it would unless you are playing games such as Supreme Commander - the kind of games that require a lot of CPU power but i think on most games it shoudl be fine

yeah only specifc games such as Supreme commander and GTA4 will use more CPU power then others, what you have now should be plenty fine until later getting a better Graphics card should be top of your list

I would get the i5 750. I've recently done pretty much the same upgrade. I had an E8500. I still don't think you would get your money's worth in upgrading the GTX260. I'm keeping hold of mine untill there is a £130-£170 DX11 card that is a fair bit faster than what I have now.

Cheers for all of your replies guys you have been very helpful.

I think what I’m going to stick with what I got atm and upgrade the graphics either to a 5850 or even one of nvidia’s new cards, depending on the price and performance. Hopefully nvidias new cards will make ati put down their prices.

I’ve got my eyes set on the 5870 at the moment, but before I make any decision I’ll have to see what nvidia has to offer. It’s only a week or so until they announce it officially.

I’ll have to make sure the wallet stays firmly shut until I see some benchies comparing the two together.
