Should I swap from 295x2 to a single 290/390?

I've had my 295x2 for nearly a year now and in general it's a very good card but there's always been a few niggles with it and recently they seems to be becoming more of an annoyance.
Obviously there are the normal issues with Xfire profiles taking time and playing games on release (I'm not trying to start another NVidia/AMD argument here, I know there are issues with SLI profiles as well) but I've also been having problems with Frame Pacing and FreeSync in Xfire as well.
Now I know those problems should be fixable but it seems like lately I've been spending a lot more time testing settings, investigating problems and fixing things rather than actually playing games and it's getting rather tiresome.
As a result of these problems I've recently been setting up profiles for games and disabling XFire and to be honest I've found most of what I play regularly (WoW, Witcher 3, Civ5:BE, DA:I) work just fine on a single gpu at 1440p with FreeSync working well to smooth things out. Yes the fps is lower than XFire and I've had to drop a couple of settings a notch but games are actually feeling smoother, they still look good and it's been much less hassle.
So I'm thinking maybe I should just sell the 295x2 on and just get a single 390 or maybe even a second hand 290 and save any cash left from the swap towards a new top single gpu next year when the true next gen cards come out? I'm not sure how much I'd get for the 295x2, maybe £350-400ish and I could probably pick up a second hand 290 for ~£150 so that could be £200 towards a next gen card and a lot less hassle in the mean time.

Does that sound like a silly thing to do, has anyone else done a similar thing?

Thanks for any thoughts,

Ross

Well Witcher 3 still has some issues with CF, some flickering in places and still stuttering as well. In my case though I can't actually get FreeSync to work at all with CF enabled.

I can understand your frustration and I have noticed Shankly has gone from CF to a single card and Freesync, so grab a 390 and this should help with all the little niggles.

in that case sell your 295 and get a fury.
I have just gone from 7990 to fury, it is like heaven now, game runs so smooth with freesync enable.

Sounds like a sound plan if you are tired of all the messing around and just want to be able to turn it on and go. Sell the 295 while it's worth something (It'll go the way of the 690 in a couple of years, ie: considered as not having enough ram for the grunt) and grab a cheap aftermarket 290 or 290x. I sold my 4gb MSI Twin Frozer IV 290x Gaming all boxed looking like new for 130 quid on the MM a couple of months ago. And then save the difference to go towards a next gen like you said, Sound plan.

Yeah I'm thinking a second hand 290/x is the way to go to maximise the cash saved for next gen. I can't justify the price of a new Fury for the performance gain over a 290.

Damn, if I could get one like that for £130 it would be a no brainer! Of course I'm guessing that means the 295x2 might not go for what I'd like.
