later this year [or whenever the new generation of ssds come out] im am thinking of swapping my asus p6t se board for a usb 3/sata 3 one

i am asking about the particular brand because a lot of the time i set the pc to go into sleep mode, for tv recordings or just power save, [is a 850W PSU] and im frequently having problems of the pc not waking at all after sleep.

ive read somewhere on here s3 sleep is a problem particularly with asus boards, and seeing as my 2 options are the ud3wr and p6x58d im swaying toward the gigabyte although the asus seems to get more praise

reason i really need sleep is i often leave blu ray transcodes going over night, they may finish at 4 am, may finish at 6am, i dont want the computer to sleep and then not resume when im up, defeats the point of sleep if i have to reset it..

also i use win MC to record programs.. dont want the pc to fail to load when its time to record

I have the Asus P6X58D-Premium and sleep works fine, It automatically wakes up to record TV in Windows Media Center (win 7 with Hauppauge HVR-2200). Have had no problems with sleep not waking at all.

thats some reassurance at least.

was also checking out the MSI X58A-GD65 .. it lacks a fair few heat sinks around the cpu area and does come out worse against the asus and gigabyte, but its slot placement and rear esata ports are perfect

gigabyte boards have cold boot issues if you put them to sleep too.

the p6x58d-e would be a better bet imho

its annoying,

asus

good
seems to have good cooling
benchmarks etc favour this board.. obv big plus

bad
has no rear esata, i have a esata external drive,
no free pci slots with 2 gfx cards
has 2 awkwardly placed sata ports
the colour scheme is bad for my pc lol

gigabyte

good
has plenty of sata ports
has esata
solid performer

bad.
for my use, again poor pci/e slot layout..what can you put in the top pci-e x1 slot??
gigantic heatsinc whic looks like it may be a problem
same colour scheme as asus lol

MSI

good
perfect PCI/e slot placement..exactly what i would want
esata port
enough sata ports
better colour scheme

bad.
slightly weaker in reviews than the other 2
havent really seen it mentioned
seems to lack a heat sink around the cpu area

i do not really know what all those heat sinks do around the cpu, if they are more for show or actually serve a purpose, but the MSI looks markedly different altogether in this area..why?

performance id go for asus.. but for practicality i really keep looking at the msi

The Asus P6X58D Premium does have Esata, its not on the backplate but on the a PCI Bracket with two USB ports, Uses a pass through cable which plugs into one of the internal SATA ports. Not sure if the P6X58D-E has the same setup though.

That would bring the SATA ports down too 7, I already have 5 devices id rather have 8+ as ill be using 6 or 7 when I get an ssd

This puts me off the asus more

Anyone have any opinion on the msi?

the msi doesnt need loads of heatsinks cause it uses different types of capacitors that generate less heat.

and yes i agree their board layouts are very good. guess u gota see how big the difference is, if its a couple of fps or so i would go msi (especially as u donno if they will improve drivers and bios etc since its new).

Thanks very much that clears up the heat sink issue

I don't think the difference is visible in anything but bench marks so hopefully a non issue.

The more I look the more I think the msi has more features I want.. especially the slot spacing
Msi just doesn't get much mention here

maybe becasue a lot of people are asus fanbois.

i dont have an msi board, but when i upgrade its likely ill change to them, i was looking at this one u mention, but i was hoping to get another board with LED debug indicator. that came in useful often with my current dfi board :P not a necessity, but if possible ill get one with it.
