Do you have a 64 bit processor?
Harsh  But, yeah do you, e.g. AMD Athlon 64, Sempron 64, FX & Opteron also Intel Processors with EM64T? & also do you have any exotic hardware like some old or less known make sound card, etc? Because you might find Windows x64 don't support it :( Like, my Asus WiFi PCI card did not work with x64. Drivers might be available now, but not bothered to look because I moved back to XP (vanilla)

EDIT: Just seen the title of your post, 'Should I update windows?' you know that x64 is a whole new OS? You will have to install it just like XP not just apply it. But it can also run side by side with another OS (XP, Linux, etc) as a Multi-Boot option at Boot time.

Harsh, but the first question that should be asked :p
From reading the first post I'd guess that he doesn't...therefor no upgrade is possible let alone recomended.

If using a 64 bit machine then I'd say that it was the way forward...yes?

i have a opty 170 :)

regarding old components i have a 7900gtx, no sound card, 150g raptor, pioneer 111 dvd rw.....so I am guessing it would be worth it?

I would use it as my primary OS....

Just wanted to find out if it was worth switching from xp pro sp2 to xp x64...

so what do you think?

Ahhhh well...I'd say aye, go for it.
It's designed for 64 bit machines, so you might as well install it and get the extra speed out of it :)

The general rule on these forums appears to be that if you don't know what advantages it would give you, you don't need it.

There are problems with driver support and application compatibility in some areas, so it would most probably be wise to wait until Vista is released to change to a 64-bit OS.

:o

Go for it, but like I said there's no harm installing it on another partition, side-by-side with XP. Thats because you never know what issues (printer drivers, & can't think of any other - except my CRT monitor needs its proper drivers to run properly & there none for x64, & before you ask its a Gateway 19" made in like 2003) could be lurking :)

Unless you need to use > 3GB of RAM, don't upgrade, there's little point.

I seem to remember some benchmarks showing that x64 ATI drivers were slightly slower than 32bit ones... I might be wrong here though.
