Should i upgrade from a 3.0ghz Opty?

Basicly ive got the spec as shown in my sig and im not sure whether to upgrade top a nice conroe setup or not

What would you do? Got about £1000 to upgrade so basicly its a toss up between a

E6600, new mobo and some DDR2 pc2-8000

OR

a DELL 2407fpw, a xfi and a set of Z-5500's

Also was wondering would there be noticable difference between some pc2-6400 and pc2-8000? Because the price difference is ridiculous! nearlly £200 in some cases!

its been said that conroe is like only 25% faster than your current setup. £1000 for a 25% boost is a complete waste i would deffo go for the screen, x-fi and speakers, i have a 32inch ws hd lcd tv and an x-fi and some 5.1 speakers and is much better than having any conroe system

agree with this too, and about the memory, well the pc2-6400 will allow a max fsb of 400mhz x 9(multiplier of the E6600) which gives you 3600mhz which is roughly the maximum oc for these chips on air, apart from maybe the x6800.

Im in exactly the same boots, im getting a 24" Dell. Then once Conroe is a little cheaper then id consider it.

Im sure u will notice a big fat TFT on the screen than a few more FPS.

To be honest, the spec in your sig is more than capable by today's standards. You wouldn't notice a massive boost by switching to Conroe. But you certainly will notice a difference with the new monitor and speakers.

The irony is that when you have the fat monitor, you'll want a more powerful system to do it justice. The opty should be fine for now though.
