Hi all,
Ive been planning to build a completely new pc for a while now but having read some recent posts on here Im considering holding off for a while, maybe until nephalem (or whetever its called!) arrives.

My only issue at the moment is gaming. Ive recently bought a pc for work (Q6600 and the rest) which is definately a step up but at home I really only need a decent gaming machine and dont tend to do much encoding etc. The x2 4800+ is still pretty quick for most daily tasks.

I cannot however play crisis and there are other games which struggle so should I just get an 8800GT or similar and a new PSU or save my pennies and wait to build an entirely new pc! Any thoughts appreciated.

Asus A8n sli deluxe
Athlon X2 4800+
rubbish psu
6800GS extreme
2Gbs corsair RAM
2 x 160Gb hard drives
CoolerMaster Centurion 5 Case

A new graphics card is all you need tbh. Save the cost of new mobo+CPU+ram and get a beast GFX, either the POV 8800GTS or the 3870X2 if you can handle that kinda power.

4800+ X2 runs at 2.4Ghz which is not too bad but if you can oc it to say 2.8Ghz (should be fairly easy for that chip) it will definately keep up.

I don't know how much you will gain with upgrading your AMD X2 but the 8800GT will be a big step up from your current card I can tell you that :) My question to you, can you actually get a newer CPU on that mobo, I thought those are socket 939, newer AMD's are AM2

As far as I know, the 4800+ is the fastest 939 cpu u can get so no, cannot upgrade cpu with the current motherboard.

should be able to still get some value for your old card! that's good :) won't make it such an expensive upgrade ;)

I'm liking what I'm hearing! Maybe I'll just save my pennies & have a full upgrade in 2009 and just invest in a new PSU & an 8800GT or maybe splash out on a 3870x2! are the 3870 x2's longer than the 8800GT's?

To be Honest m8, Just get a better graphics card and upgrade to the 6400+, You will see a big difference, At the same time, There is no point right now in spending so much money on a entirenly new build when you are going to kick yourself to what comes down the line 3 months later.

I played SP Crysis quite a lot on my X2 4600+ and to be honest you only need a decent graphics card, i have a 8800GTS and had crysis on high at 1400x1050 was perfectly playable and with a fairly good (playable) frame rate to boot.

If you just want it for that then GPU all the way, yeah sure you could benefit from a better processor, but then you could also benefit from more RAM then a better mobo... SLi maybe... the list goes on lol
