I have a Toshiba Laptop with

15" widescreen display

1.5ghz Dothan Celeron:M

2x256mb ram

40gig HD 4200rpm

Radion9700

Now Im starting to find some things a bit slugish which Im sure is more HD and ram related.

Is it worth replacing one of the 256mb ram's for a 1gig one and getting a faster HD such as one of those IBM 7200rpm jobie's?

In my experience, yes.

I have an Acer 3023WLMi:

Sempron 3000+
5400rpm (i think, its the one below 7200) 80GB HDD
2x256mb RAM default, 1x256mb RAM 1x1024MB RAM after upgrade

Default RAM, I had half life 2 on medium graphics and it was a little laggy, might as well have forgotten about Call of Duty 2, black and white 2 hardly ran... But after upgrading to ~1256mb RAM, the difference was incredible. HL2 runs on pretty much max graphics, call of duty 2 is fine on medium, black and white 2 is fine also (cant remember the settings though). Even Sims 2 has a noticeable performance boost.

That 1GB stick of RAM was the best thing my gf could have bought me :D If you have the money, get 2x1GB sticks of the fastest RAM your mobo will support. I'm sure that'll have a pretty huge difference :D

Think it can only take PC2700.

Its about £80 ish for 1 gig at the mo so prob stick at that... same for a 100gig HD - Just wondering if £160 is worth spending on my laptop or should save for a new one and sell this...?

Forgot to say my laptop has an x700 in it.

Erm yeah, I dunno. I guess it depends how long you think you will have that laptop, and how soon you could upgrade if you didn't get the upgrade. Will you use it enough to warrant the £160? The 9700 is getting on a bit now so it won't be *that* long till you need to consider upgrading for games.

Actually I mostly use this laptop for net, msn'ing, converting mp3s and DVD's... and music programmes.

The main prob I have at mo - is multitasking

I will be the first to admit I dont have the most experience with laptops (I dont own one) but I would recommend keeping what you have, save up and sell your old one and then buy a new one.

A decent dual core one is coming down in price (providing you dont want a awesome GPU on it) so it should make you more than happy TBH.

The Celeron is letting it down. I wouldn't upgrade, just leave it until it's unbearingly slow and buy a new laptop.

I had a 1.6Ghz P4 Mobile, 512MB RAM, 20GB 4200rpm (then upgraded to 60GB 5400RPM)

My suggestions:

- CPU - u can try to look for a Pentium M 725 2nd hand.
- RAM - at least upgrade to 1gb (2 x 512mb or 1 x 1gb is up to u)
- HDD - at least a 5400rpm hdd

well, whether u should upgrade depends on ** usage. if you're a hardcore gamer, u should upgrade. if not, i tink just upgrade the ram and hdd will do

Thing is a lot of people when the see Celeron they go eekk and say thats the problem - but the Celeron:M is almost identical to the Pentium:M.... Only Differeance really is that the Celeron has the advanced power saving caperbiltys dissabled... but the performance is almost the same (celeron has 1mb cashe v PM's 2mb)... its the same dolphan core.

I actually find the CPU to be quite zippy as long as I have memory free...
