I've been out of the loop for quite a while (a couple of years since I built my first and so far only rig) and was wondering what the accepted wisdom is on CPUs currently?
The reason I ask is that whjile I've always felt my CPU is the weakest part of my system it has always been lightning-fast for all my work use and when I did OC it heavily I couldn't notice a difference in games - at all. There may have been a few FPS gained, but nothing significant. At the time I put the system together I was advised that it was not necessary to pay extra for the HT and cores on the 4770k as games didn't really make use of them. Is this still the case?
There isn't anything wrong with my CPU at all, and honestly if I can I'd rather spend the money upgrading to a 980ti and possibly a Swift! Any advice most welcome!
