Should I upgrade my router?

I was wondering if it's about time I upgraded my router. I currently use the bt home hub v1.0 and have done since I first got broadband installed.

But I'm really wanting to increase my network speed as now I stream a lot of hd movies to my ps3 (or at least I try too!) but my network just isn't up to the job. HD movies stutter and I end up copying the movies to my ps3 first, which feels like it takes forever.

Running an internet speed test at www.broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk I consistently get around a download speed of around 5Mb/s and an upload speed of around 0.3Mb/s. Not sure how that relates to network speed though?

Would a new router solve my streaming problem?

Use a different speed test website, that one is crap.

www.speedtest.net

Are you trying to stream movies over wireless? If so then you will not have great success as both your router and the PS3 are 54g which is not ideal, though can be sufficient it's not always up to the job, wire it if you can.

Much nicer website, I tried it a few times there and it gave very similar results to the other one, with between 3 and 5 Mbps and a consistent 03 Mbps upload speed.

And yeah I've been trying to stream movies over wireless, and it's not working that well. Would streaming hd content work if I was to attach the router to the ps3?

I'm assuming you are streaming HD movies from your PC to you PS3 not trying to stream them over your internet connection? You internet connection will struggle with decen HD content as it is pretty slow.

if your streaming locally wireless is a pain for HD even N can be found wanting. Ideal situation is a direct cat 5 cable from the PS3 to the router failing that try some homeplugs should give you a faster more reliable connection than wireless unless your house is in desperate need of a rewire.

yeah, I'm definitely only streaming movies from my pc to ps3 after they've already been downloaded, takes far too long on my connection to think about anything else.

I will take your advice on connecting the ps3 to the router with a direct cat 5 cable. But due to the position of my pc, that will only be connected to the network wirelessly, is that likely to pose a problem or should HD streaming be fine with that set up.

Would it still be advisable to get a good wireless N-router as well?

Anyone think a good wireless N-router would help me streaming movies to my ps3, or will it not make much difference over my BT home hub (v1.0)

yeah I will definitely be wiring up my router to my ps3 which will remove that as the weak point in my setup, but I was still planning to have my pc connected wirelessly.

Will an N-router transfer the data quicker?

Also, I'm not very clued up on this type of stuff at all, but assuming you have everything wired, what determines the speed at which data is transferred over your network?
