Should I upgrade or start again?

Hi,

Could anyone give me advise on whether I should upgrade my current PC or start again with a completely new rig? The primary purpose of my PC is gaming and in the newer games my frame rate is starting to suffer.

This is my current spec:

CPU: i5 2500k @ 3.3 GHz
Mother Board: P8Z68-V
RAM: 8GB DDR3 668MHz
Graphics: AMD Radeon HD 6850
HDD: Standard 500GB (Not sure of speed)
PSU: 600W

Based on this spec would anyone suggest replacing everything or just upgrading a few pieces? I was considering upgrading just the graphics card and getting a SSD, with maybe a little more RAM and a bigger PSU.
I have a budget of £1000 so I imagine I could get some fairly high quality upgrades but I'm not sure if the rest of my hardware is good enough anymore.

If anyone could offer any advise it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I would just upgrade mate, I'm still rocking a 2500k and it's amazing.

I would get a graphics card, RAM, SSD, HDD & depending on the type of PSU you have and its age, that may need to be replaced also.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Gigabyte GeForce GTX 780 WindForce 3x OC Rev2.0 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (GV-N780OC-3GD) £359.99
1 x Samsung 250GB SSD 840 EVO SATA 6Gb/s Basic - (MZ-7TE250BW) £119.98
1 x Corsair Hydro H100i High Performance Liquid CPU Cooler (CW-9060009-WW) £88
1 x Western Digital Caviar Green 2TB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache - OEM (WD20EZRX) HDD £69.95
1 x TeamGroup Vulcan ORANGE 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-19200C11 2400MHz Dual Channel Kit (TLAD38G2400HC11CDC01) £55.99
1 x SuperFlower Golden Green HX 550W "80 Plus Gold" Power Supply - Black £49.99
Total : £753.49 (includes shipping : £8.00).

What case do you have? You'll need to make sure you can fit this cooler in and overclock your 2500k to 4.5ghz+.

Upgrade and start with a new gpu. Over clocking will have minimal impact compared to a new gpu.
And make sure your psu is up to it.

What psu have you got and how old is it?
I would just get a gpu and ssd it I were you and see what you think.
Also what do you use it for and what resolution?

Thanks for the replies

My current PSU is quite old now I think Ive used it in my last 2 builds so its maybe 4 - 5 years old, perhaps a little more.
The computer is used for gaming, mainly MMOs and screen resolution is 1600x900

I would even try to get a new monitor, 1920x1080 is pretty much standard these days for main monitors.

Without knowing the make of the Psu, it's impossible to comment on whether it is or isn't up to the task.
So, assuming it isn't, I would look at new Gpu, ssd, Psu and a decent monitor.

Still leaves you some money for a cooler, case or new peripherals.

I could probably do with a new case as well come to think of it, this ones probably 12 years old now and doesn't handle the heat very well. Not looking for anything fancy just something efficient.

Thanks again for the info

This is what I have so far:

1 x Sapphire Radeon R9 290 Tri-X OC 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (11227-00-40G) £359.99
1 x Samsung 250GB SSD 840 EVO SATA 6Gb/s Basic - (MZ-7TE250BW) £119.98
1 x SuperFlower Golden Green HX 650W "80 Plus Gold" Power Supply - Black £65.99
1 x Corsair Carbide 300R Mid Tower Case - Black (CC-9011014-WW) £59.99

I would defiantly benefit from getting new monitors as my current ones are also very old but I just don't have space for dual 24s.

Could you recommend a 22" alternative?

Best thing about upgrading to a good PSU is that it doesn't become obsolete anywhere near as quick as other bits so it's worth spending.

I'd go PSU, GPU and SSD. It'll feel like a new PC then anyway :)

Do you need 2 monitors?
