Should I upgrade or start over? please help! :)

Hi, I was thinking of getting a new laptop, mainly for gaming - but that was a stupid idea as they become hideously expensive quickly.

I was wondering if I should upgrade my old gaming rig, or just start over with a new one.

It is about three years old, and is getting a bit noisy and problematic.
The specs are:

Ati Radeon x1800xt 256mb
2gb DDR 2 ram
250gb maxtor 7200rpm
Pentium D 3ghz
550w thermaltake psu
some gigabyte motherboard, which is incapable of crossfire.
I have a budget of around 700£, without the monitor.
Do you think it is better value to create a new computer (myself, new parts etc - not custom built ie alienware), or to just upgrade my current one

Salvage what you can i.e what case/psu you have and if you want to keep them but think its gonna have to be a new build.

I've got a thermaltake soprano case, i'm assuming that any motherboard will fit into this, am I correct?
