Should I Upgrade or Wait?

Hello,

So I already have a pretty decent build, but i'm going to take it further and upgrade.

As I'm going to be Open Loop water cooling I want to have my upgrade pretty much set before hand.

I am currently running an i7 3930k with an Asus P9x79 Motherboard.

I can overclock my CPU however it has a tendency to crash with a memory error (I think its one of the cores).

Would upgrading from my i7 3930k to a i7 6700k be a noticeable difference ?

Or should I wait (and I don't mind waiting as my CPU isn't exactly incompetent) for Cannonlake.

Cheers

I certainly wouldn't go from a 6 core CPU to a 4 core CPU. Sounds like a massive downgrade. Why not wait until Broadwell-E is released at some point in the first half of the year?

And if you can't wait what about a Haswell-E CPU? That would be better than a 6700k to upgrade to. At least you would keep all 6 of your cores (or you could go for the high end model and get an 8 core CPU which would be a nice upgrade).

I was thinking the same in regards to downgrading from a 6 core to a 4 core, but howmuch of a difference in performance is there?

I also don't think in CPU performance there is much point in upgrading to x99 5930k unless I go 5960k which is very costly.

I do not mind waiting by any means as my CPU is more than potent. I just want a new Mobo and DDR4 to which 2011 is now discontinued the only option I have is to upgrade.

PC is used for Gaming so 4 cores for gaming.

The logical upgrade would be a x99/5820k. Forget the 4 core gamer chips if you are doing anything else like development and encoding etc. Would just be a downgrade IMO.

Oh yeah in terms of development (To which is my primary usage) the 6 Cores is much better. That's why I'm sticking with 6 cores or more.

But upgrading from the 3930k to the 5820k will not really be much of a performance upgrade aside of the DDR4 at which 32GB I need.

And at the cost of around the £1000-£1500 mark for the 5820k upgrade for minimal upgrade is not worth it.

Guess I should wait for the next line of 6 cores then on the 10/14 nm die.

The misses will have to wait until she gets my old rig haha.

it is not worth it, not to mention that you will get worst performance when all 12 threads are in use, although you will get better performance on applications that use 1-4 cores.

Even on my CPU I have had the urge to upgrade, but staying put. Or I'll go "oh shoot, all that money for this.." as I mainly game, that is.

Yeah, I'm not in the need of an urgent CPU upgrade it was purely for a new Mobo and the DDR4 (which will make a huge impact). All my funds are split into specific parts IE Case, GPU, CPU, WaterCooling etc.

Firstly a case, then a GPU but I'm waiting for Pascal until I make a decision.
