will this spec last me a few more years and on windows 7

Intel Pentium D @ 2.66 GHz
XFX 4850 'xxx edition GPU 512MB
Some weird MSI board
1GB of RAM! (is this one thing i should upgrade? will their be a noticable difference in speed?)

i may upgrade to an i5 after christmas, but i'm going to wait for prices/deals to fall and come around, or if my spec here with a bit more RAM will do for a few years.

Hmm.... I think a P4D setup is borderline to be honest. You'll probably get away with it for a little while longer. My old spec which was a P4D with a ATI Radeon X1300XL was decent enough at playing BF2 so with your much better GPU I think gaming wise you should be able to play modern games just a lower settings. RAM could be a quick fix, but you'd be spending money on something that will not be carried forward into your new system, are you using DDR or DDR2? For the cost of a tenner though I'd be tempted to through an extra 1GB in there.

I'd probably wait until Feb if I where you, TBH I don't want to upgrade until I understand Intel's plans for their differing platforms. I think buying an i7 vs i5 rig is all about knowing their plans and until we do I think it's a risk to upgrade. With AMD your on slightly better ground as the AM3 socket is definitely doing to be about for a bit longer to support the 6 core CPUs coming up. But with Intel it's almost a case of putting your finger in the air to judge the wind in terms of deciding on a chipset.

Hang tight for a while is my advice.
